Computer Applications Courses CA1 *COMPUTER CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS IN BUSINESS 4 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of BUS 1A and, Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A and MATH A. Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. This course introduces the uses of computers in business including microcomputer applications. Topics covered include hardware, software, procedures, systems, and their integration into business applications. Computer concepts, systems, and components will be studied. Microcomputer software applications to be covered include word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and database management. Operating systems and environments, including DOS and Windows commands, procedures, and utilities, will also be covered. The course will conclude with an introductory study of programming languages with BASIC programming language being emphasized. BEFORE ENROLLING students should be able to complete an accounting worksheet, prepare a balance sheet and income statement from a worksheet, and compute depreciation. Students should also have knowledge of the following accounting concepts: receivables, payables, inventory, payroll, and the accounting cycle. (CSU, AVC) CA 30 *INTRODUCTION TO MICROCOMPUTERS 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. This course is designed to teach the first- time computer user the features of a personal microcomputer, how a micro- computer operates, and how to select a microcomputer to best fit individual needs. Students will acquire an increased awareness of the operating system and major features of popular commercial applications software, including word processors, electronic spreadsheets, database managers, and graphics. The course includes hands -on operation of a microcomputer. No prior computer experience is needed. This is not a programming class. (Engineering and Science Majors consult counselors) (CSU, AVC) CA 33 *MICROCOMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEMS 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CA 1 or CA 30 and, Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. The purpose of the course is to teach students how to use an operating system to manage IBM compatible microcomputer resources. DOS is the primary focus, with limited coverage of Windows and other operating systems including OS/2 and UNIX. The most popular utility programs and virus detection software is covered. BEFORE ENROLLING students should have used DOS to format disks, make backup copies, copy files, erase files, work with subdirectories and set date/time. An understanding of how PCs, software, and peripherals work together is important. (CSU, AVC) CA 36 *MICROCOMPUTER SPREADSHEETS 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CA 1 or CA 30 and, Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. This course will study concepts of electronic spreadsheets from intermediate through advanced level. Solutions to quantitative problems will be developed in such a way that they can be modeled on a microcomputer. Topics to be covered include developing formulas, writing macro commands, formatting the spreadsheet, making graphs, linking spreadsheets, and importing/exporting data. BEFORE ENROLLING students should have used spreadsheet software to enter labels and numbers, develop formulas, save and retrieve files, build graphs, and print, as well as an understanding of how PCs, software, and peripherals work together. (CSU, AVC) CA 39 *MICROCOMPUTER DATABASE MANAGEMENT 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CA 1 or CA30 and, Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A.
