Page 11 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster CaliforniaAdmission and Registration 9 Eligibility for Admission, Regular Status Academic Eligibility: All high school graduates are eligible for admission to Antelope Valley College providing they satisfy residence requirements. All 16 and 17 year old students who have not graduated from high school may apply to take the examination for a Certificate of Proficiency. If the student successfully passes the exam, the State Board of Education will award a certificate of proficiency, which authorizes the holder to enroll at Antelope Valley College on the same basis as regularly graduated high school students. This exam is administered three times each year at Antelope Valley High School. A non-high school graduate 18 years of age or older, who is capable of profiting from the instruction offered, may be admitted to Antelope Valley College (State Education Code, Division 7, Part 47, Chapter 1, Article 1, Section 76000, amended, effective 1/1/91), State Educa- tion Code is available in the Antelope Valley College library. Concurrent Enrollment Students currently enrolled in public and private schools may concurrently enroll at Antelope Valley College under the provisions of the Presley Bill. Students must obtain permission from the school principal. Consult the school guidance office for proper procedures and forms. Eligibility for Foreign Students A foreign student planning to apply for admission to Antelope Valley College must obtain a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service. The name of a local sponsor within the Antelope Valley area who will accept financial and legal responsibility for the student must be submitted to the Dean of Admissions with a written statement of intent to accept such responsibility. Residence Eligibility A student whose legal residence is within the State of California will be required to pay an enrollment fee. A student whose legal residence is outside the State of California is required to pay a nonresident tuition fee of $106 per unit per semester plus the enrollment fee. In order to establish legal residence in the State of California for the purpose of attending public institutions of higher education, a student must live in the State one full year. Students who are in the United States on certain temporary visas are precluded from establishing residency in California for tuition purposes. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate that he or she has established a permanent residence within California for at least one year. Following are some of the objective manifestations of intent to establish California residence: 1. Ownership of residential property or continuous occupancy of rented or leased property in California. 2. Registering to vote and voting in California. 3. Licensing from California for professional practice. 4. Active membership in service or social clubs. 5. Presence of spouse, children or other close relatives in the state. 6. Showing California as home address on federal income tax form. 7. Payment of California state income tax as a resident. 8. Possessing California motor vehicle license plates. 9. Possessing a California drivers license. 10. Maintaining permanent military address or home of record in California while in armed forces. 11. Establishing and maintaining active California bank accounts. 12. Being the petitioner for a divorce in California. 13. Continuous physical presence in the State except for absences which can be explained without conflicting with establishment of residence. Conduct inconsistent with a claim of California residence includes but is not limited to: 1. Maintaining voter registration and voting in another state. 2. Being the petitioner for a divorce in another state. 3. Attending an out-of-state institution as a residence of that other state. 4. Declaring nonresidence for state income tax purposes. Any student, following a final decision on residence classification by the Dean of Admissions, may make written appeal to the Vice-president Student Services within 30 calendar days of notification of the final decision regarding classification. Questions regarding residence or residence determination should be directed to the Dean of Admissions. Eligibility for Admission, Probationary Status A student will be permitted to register on probationary status if he/she is in one of the following categories: 1. He/she was dismissed in his/her last semester of attendance for disciplinary reasons from a community or four-year college. 2. He/she has a record indicating poor citizenship. 3. He/she received a grade point average of less than 2.0 for units attempted in the preceding semester of attendance at any four-year college. Limitations on kinds of courses and number of units that a student may take while on probation will be determined by the College. Evaluation of Transcripts All transcripts received from other schools which a student has attended will be examined at the time of enrollment to assist students with selection of classes. Requests for an official evaluation of credit earned at other institutions may be filed only if one of the following conditions has been met: 1. Student has successfully completed 30 semester units of credit at Antelope Valley College.[close] |
