Economics 109 Definition Economics is concerned with the study of how people and societies produce various commodities and distribute them for consumption, now or in the future, among various persons and groups in society. The economics program includes the study of the American economic system, using techniques for the analysis of con- temporary economic problems. There is an emphasis on developing the ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating public policy issues. The program emphasizes economic analysis, institutions and policy in American, regional, and urban settings. Distinctive Features Economics is designed to facilitate the students matriculation to the four year colleges or to provide an understanding of the economic world we live in. Key concepts and methodology for analysis are emphasized. Transfer A student planning to pursue a bachelors degree should complete the following courses prior to transfer. Economics Courses ECON 1A *PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for MATH A. An introductory analysis of basic macroeconomic concepts. Emphasizes national income theory and accounting, the Federal Reserve System, and the causes of growth, inflation and unemployment. Includes an investigation of political and banking (financial) policies used to stabilize economic growth and control inflation. (CSU, UC, AVC) ECON 1B *PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for MATH A. An introductory analysis of basic microeconomic concepts. Emphasizes the theory of demand and supply, business organization, price determination, and an analysis of costs. Includes investigations of market structures, economic performance, government regulation, and international microeconomics. (CSU, UC, AVC) ECON 10 *ECONOMICS OF THE UNDERCLASS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Investigation of the economic inequalities as they presently exist in America and their ramifications for the permanent underclass in our society. Course focuses primarily on women, Blacks, and Chicanos and deals specifically with the economic impact of poverty, unemployment, and discrimi- nation on these groups. Problems for alleviation or solution of the human misery suffered by these groups are also discussed. (CSU, UC, AVC)
