Students will be required to read each others work and will also be exposed to professionally produced film scripts. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 11A *ADVANCED FICTION WRITING 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Course helps students further develop fiction writing skills. It looks especially at the craft necessary to execute polished, publishable stories, and at the technical aspects of planning and plotting a novel. Published fiction by a diversity of authors will also be examined. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 11B *ADVANCED POETRY WRITING 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Course helps students further develop poetry writing skills. It looks especially at the craft necessary to complete finished, high quality poems, and at the literary traditions available to con- temporary writers. Published poetry by a diversity of authors will also be examined. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 50AR4 BASIC COMPOSITION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4. Aimed at the developing writer, this course teaches reading and writing skills essential for producing clear, competent expository prose. Special emphasis is placed on grammatical correctness, construction of paragraphs and short essays, and the organization of ideas. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) ENGL 50BR4 INTERMEDIATE COMPOSITION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. This course increases a students fluency as a writer by reviewing and enlarging those skills essential for producing clear, competent, and developed expository prose. Special emphasis is placed on grammatical correctness, development of thesis, paragraph completeness, and organization of ideas. Students read and write extensively. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (AVC) English-Literature Courses ENGL 24 *CHICANO LITERATURE 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1A. An introductory analysis of the literary, social, and cultural aspects of novels, short stories, essays, poetry, and theater, reflecting Mexican-American society. The course will study the contributions of Chicanos in literature and how various literary forms express their world view and culture. The course will deal with the Mexican-American in relation to American whites including issues of racism and sexism. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 25 LITERATURE AND FILM 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1A. A critical analysis of literary and cultural aspects of cinema, American and foreign, particularly as cinema relates to the philosophical and aesthetic developments found in conventional literature (novels, short stories, drama). The course examines film as unique literary expression as well as film adaptations of other literary media. Emphasis is on the literary basis and function of the film genre. In addition to the films studied, students will read literary works that have been adapted into film, as well as selected critical works that deal with film as literature. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 26 *CROSS CULTURAL LITERATURE IN AMERICA 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1A. This course examines literary works from mainstream American culture and from two or more of the following American cultures: African-American, Hispanic, Asian-Pacific Islander, Native American or women. Other American cultures may also be included. The works may be drawn from essays, fiction, poetry, drama and film. Works will be analyzed as literary works, as products of a particular culture and as expressions of individual authors. Particular attention will be paid to the similarities and differences among cultures and works as well as to the issues of racism and sexism. (CSU, UC, AVC) ENGL 27 *STUDIES IN POETRY 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1A. This course is designed to introduce students to the study of poetry as a literary form. The course will provide an historical perspective on the development of poetry through reading of representative selections from various periods. The main focus of the course will be understanding the elements of poetry and developing the skills to interpret and judge poetry of varying types.
