The students strengths and weaknesses are assessed, and a learning program is developed to meet the students individual needs. Instruction is self-paced, focusing on mastery learning. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) 1 unit 22 verified hours Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4 and ENGL 51AR2. To qualify for this class, the student must pass a grammar test. The course covers writing anxiety, the writing process, audience and purpose, clarity, development, and organizational strategies. Students will learn how to increase the number of words they know and use; make full use of the dictionary; determine the correct pronunciation of words; infer (figure out) the meaning of words by context clues (how they are used), base words and affixes (a piece of a word that gives a clue about the words meaning), how to differentiate (distinguish between) words that are pronounced the same or similarly. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) 1 unit 22 verified hours Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51AR2. Students will learn how to use spelling rules; spell consonant and vowel sounds in words; avoid spelling errors caused by faulty pronunciations; proofread to correct spelling errors; locate correct spellings of words in the dictionary; use the apostrophe and hyphen; capitalize and abbreviate words. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) 1 unit 22 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4 and ENGL 51BR2. The skills stressed are comprehension, study reading, study listening and test- taking. Instruction is self-paced. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs,) 2 units 2 hours weekly This is a remedial grammar lecture class. It includes the study of parts of speech, basic sentence pat terns, capitalization, punctuation. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) 1-4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: AVC Assessment Test. This course offers instruction in the basic learning skills: reading, arithmetic, spelling, vocabulary and writing. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) English As A Second Language Courses 5 units 5 hours weekly This is a basic skills course for non-native speakers with limited knowledge of English. Students at this level will be limited in ability or unable to read or write in English. Its goal is to prepare students for ESL 50, which assumes the ability to read and write in English. NOTE: No grade will be given for this class, student will receive credit or no credit only. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ESL 50. Advisory: Concurrent enrollment in ESL 58. This course is designed for beginning students whose native language is not English. The course is designed to teach and practice oral/aural skills at the beginning level and emphasis is on everyday communication needed for survival in one-on-one and small group communication.
