Chinese Courses CHINESE 1 *ELEMENTARY CHINESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. This course is intended for beginners who desire Chinese as a foreign language. It is a standard foreign language course offering vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Includes audio training and phonology and practical vocabulary, parts of speech, basic sentences and conversation. (CSU, UC, AVC) CHINESE 2 *ELEMENTARY CHINESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CHINESE I. This course is intended for beginners who continue to have Elementary Chinese as a foreign language and promote the use of Chinese language and characters as a vehicle for better communication and the interflow of cultures and to acquaint people in the world with the Chinese national heritage. (CSU, UC, AVC) FRENCH 1 *ELEMENTARY FRENCH 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Introduction to understanding, speaking, reading and writing French. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. Course will include work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. The basic geography and history of French-speaking countries will also be covered. (CSU, UC, AVC) FRENCH 2 *ELEMENTARY FRENCH 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of FRENCH 1. Course continues the work of French 1 on understanding, speaking, reading and writing French. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. Course will include work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. A more in- depth knowledge of geography, culture, and history of French-speaking countries will also be covered. (CSU, UC, AVC) FRENCH 3 *INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of FRENCH 2. This course will develop students' reading, writing, listening and speaking ability. A variety of texts, including contemporary fiction, will be read and discussed. Several contemporary issues will be covered in-depth. Students will also hear radio emissions, songs, and short grammar explanations. Class work includes reading aloud, working in groups or pairs, and review of grammar and practice exercises. The major historical periods, events and political figures of French-speaking countries will be introduced. The course is conducted entirely in French. (CSU, UC, AVC) FRENCH 4 *INTERMEDIATE FRENCH 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of FRENCH 3. Course continues to develop students' ability to read, write, speak and comprehend French. Students will read and discuss intermediate literary and non-literary texts. Grammar will be reviewed as necessary through brief lectures and exercises. Major twentieth century French authors will be introduced through reading and discussion. The course will be conducted entirely in French. (CSU, UC, AVC) FRENCH 5 *ADVANCED FRENCH 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of FRENCH 4. Reading and discussion of literary texts. Students will also read contemporary non- literary texts, such as newspapers, magazines and essays on topics of current interest.
