Introduction to understanding, speaking, reading and writing German. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. Course will include work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. (CSU, UC, AVC) GERMAN 2 *ELEMENTARY GERMAN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GERMAN 1. Course continues the work begun in German 1 on understanding, speaking, reading and writing German. Emphasis is on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge necessary to communicate in everyday situations. Course will include work in pairs and small groups so that students will be active learners. (CSU, UC, AVC) GERMAN 3 *INTERMEDIATE GERMAN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GERMAN 2. Course will develop students reading, writing, listening and speaking ability. A variety of texts, including contemporary short stories, will be read and discussed. Several contemporary issues will be covered in-depth. Students will also hear radio emissions, songs and short lectures. Classwork includes reading aloud, working in groups or pairs, and review of grammar and practice exercises. The major historical periods, events, and political figures of German-speaking countries will be introduced. The course is conducted entirely in German. (CSU, UC, AVC) GERMAN 4 *INTERMEDIATE GERMAN 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GERMAN 3. Course continues to develop students ability to read, write, speak and comprehend German. Students will read and discuss intermediate literary and non- literary texts. Grammar will be reviewed as necessary through brief lectures and exercises. Major twentieth century German authors will be introduced through reading and discussion of short stories. The course will be conducted entirely in German. (CSU, UC, AVC) GERMAN 5 *ADVANCED GERMAN 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GERMAN 4. Course provides a cultural history of Germany, covering politics, philosophy, music, art, and literature. Time periods and topics covered will vary each semester. Students will read and discuss texts, practice speaking and oral comprehension and write answers to discussion questions and/or essays, and make oral presentations. (CSU, UC, AVC) GERMAN 8 GERMAN CONVERSATION 2 units 2 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of GERMAN 1. This course will focus on improving students ability to speak and to understand spoken German through extensive study of vocabulary. Students will frequently work in pairs and small groups to practice conversing or discussing a weekly topic. Class will be conducted entirely in German. (CSU, AVC) Hebrew Course HEBREW 1 *ELEMENTARY BIBLICAL HEBREW 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of Biblical Hebrew, including phonetics and grammatical structure. Emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to translate passages from various books of the Bible into fluent English, and the ability to read aloud the Biblical text. (CSU, UC, AVC) Japanese Courses JAPANESE 1 *ELEMENTARY JAPANESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. This course is designed to provide the beginning student with a working knowledge of elementary Japanese, including phonetic and grammatical structures. Emphasis will be placed on speaking, listening, writing, and reading the two Japanese syllabic systems (Kana), plus the introduction of Chinese characters (Kanji). (CSU, UC, AVC) JAPANESE 2 *ELEMENTARY JAPANESE 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of JAPANESE 1. This course is designed to provide the continuing beginning student with a working knowledge of elementary Japanese, including phonetic and grammatical structures.
