Page 140 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California138 Guidance Definition Guidance courses provide support, encouragement, and instruction for students returning to school after an interruption in their education and for continuing students. Adjunct Faculty: DeNean Coleman Susan McGarey Jack Pool Jack Wengert Donna Vinsant The courses help students increase self- awareness and self-confidence; improve learning skills; and, identify and accomplish educational, vocational, and personal goals. The college offers four guidance courses: College and Life Management Personal Development College Survival Skills Career Planning Students taking one or more guidance courses may participate in the adult reentry program, called New Directions. The program provides support services including counseling, information, referrals, and special activities for adults returning to school after an interruption in their education. Though the guidance courses do not directly apply to any particular career alternatives, the courses help develop skills and knowledges that are critical to making a successful transition to the challenges of a college education. Transfer Not a transfer major. Guidance Courses GUID 1 COLLEGE AND LIFE MANAGEMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 50BR4 or Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The ideas and concepts presented will focus on increasing understanding of personal lifestyles and how the college experience, as a learning process, leads to the creation of a successful lifestyle. Emphasis will be placed on raising awareness and assimilating these ideas and concepts into ones everyday habits and routines. This course is designed to explore learning styles and skills (note taking, test taking, organizing and managing resources, reading strategies, memory), health and exercise, communication and relationships, sexuality, stress, goal setting, and decision-making as these topics relate to creating a lifestyle that is personally satisfying and fulfilling. (CSU, AVC) GUID 5 *PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 50BR4 or Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Designed to facilitate personal growth, interpersonal effectiveness and increased understanding of self and others. Focus is on self-exploration, confidence building, communication skills including asser- tiveness training, active personal involvement, group interaction, and self- study projects emphasized. (CSU, AVC) GUID 53A *COLLEGE SURVIVAL SKILLS 1.5 units 24 hours total Designed for students returning to school after an interruption in their education. Provides an orientation to college services and programs, as well as educational counseling. Emphasizes the development of study and learning skills. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) GUID 53B *CAREER PLANNING 1.5 units 24 hours total Exploration and assessment of values, interests, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics. Development of decision- making, self-understanding and career exploration skills. Sources of career and educational information. Consideration of appropriate career choices. GUID 99R *WORK EXPERIENCE 1-4 units hours vary Prerequisite: Completion of 12 units of college work, and registration in a total of 8 units in courses leading to a major related to work experience assignment, and approval of instructor supervising work experience area. Provides combined related vocational classroom instruction with on-the-job employment experiences directly related to a students occupational objective.
