142 Interior Design Definition Interior design is a service profession that has been spurred by the emphasis of fashion interiors, changing life-styles and technology, recognition of special environmental needs, demographic changes, and growth in the housing market. Businesses which provide interior furnishings for home and industry have expanded their services to include skilled professionals able to interpret and respond to consumer needs. The interiors field affects not only the individual within the home environment but has become a critical factor in business and industry in providing functional and productive work environments. The program is designed to meet the minimum entry level qualifications for interior occupations as well as provide individual expertise in achieving function and fashion in interior environments. Distinctive Features Students take field trips to design centers and interior design businesses to learn about current trade practices. Career Options The following employment areas are where positions may be available which relate to design, advertising, product development, public relations, consumer relations, housing developments, and management. Architectural Firms Educational Institutions Furnishing Manufacturers Governmental Agencies related to Hotels Interior Design Firms Retail Stores environment and housing Certificate Program Students must have a C or better in all course work used to qualify for the certificate. The following courses (30 units) are required for the Interior Design certificate: CT 1, Principles of Clothing Selection (3) CT 2, Textiles (3) IDH 1, Introduction to Interior Design (3) IDH 2, Advanced Problems in Interior IDH 3, Family Housing (3) IDH 4/ART 11R2, Interior Design Computer Concepts (3) Design (3) Electives: Select 12 units ART 1A, History of Art (3) ART 1B, History of Art (3) BUS 41, Introduction to Business (3) BUS 52A, Business English and BUS 52B, Business Communications (3) CNST TEC 61A, Architectural Drafting (6) LNDSC 72A, Basic Landscape Design (2) MGT 58, Small Business Management (3) PSYCH 1, General Psychology (3) Communications (3) Associate Degree The major requirements for an associate degree in Interior Design may be satisfied by completing a minimum of 18 units from the certificate program. Of these 18 units, at least 12 units must be from the required list of courses rather than the list of elective courses. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements. The major requirements for an associate degree in Family and Consumer Education may be satisfied by completing the required 12 units under Section A and at least 9 units in one area of emphasis under Section B. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) SECTION A: Complete the following required courses.
