Management 145 Definition Management is the achievement of organizational objectives through people and other resources. By effective planning, organizing, directing and controlling, managers combine capital, labor and materials to accomplish their goals. Our offerings range from studying standard corporate organizations to analyzing the embryonic small business. Associate degrees and certificate programs are offered in General Management, Industrial Management, Small Business Manage- ment, and Office Management. Distinctive Features The Management program is distinctively an evening-oriented program. While several of the management classes are offered during the day, most of the management students attend during the evening. Under the Small Business Institute Program (SBI) local businesses and business students can participate in a Federally sponsored U.S. Small Business Administration consulting program. Career Options Branch Manager Department Manager First-line Supervisor Office Manager Plant Manager Project Manager Shift Supervisor Small Business Owner/Manger Certificate Programs Students must have a C or better in all coursework used to qualify for any Management certificate. A maximum of 9 credit/no credit units will be accepted for a Management Certificate. A minimum of 9 units of certificate coursework must be completed at Antelope Valley College. (Credit earned by examination will not be included in these 9 units.) The following six core courses are required for any one of the four Management Certificates. Core courses are generally to be taken prior to the option classes. A Management Certificate requires 30-34 units. Core (18-22 Units) BUS 41, Introduction to Business (3) BUS 50, Business Mathematics (3) or MATH 14, Math for Business and Economics (5) or MATH 5, Precalculus (5) or higher. BUS 52B, Business Communications (3) BUS 55, Bookkeeping (3) or BUS 1A, Principles of Accounting (4) CA 30, Introduction to Microcomputers (3) or CIS 40, Introduction to Computer Information Science (3) or CA 1, Computer Concepts and Applications in Business (4) MGT 50, Management Principles (3) Option 1 GENERAL MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE This program provides entry-level management skills to those entering or currently employed in first-level management or supervisory positions. Core courses (18-22 units) plus: BUS 18A, Business Law (3) MGT 51 Communication in Management (3) MGT 52, Human Behavior in Organizations (3) (Fall only) or MGT 53, Organization and Management Development (3) MGT 56, Labor Management Relations (3) or MGT 59, Human Resources Management (3) (Spring only) (No electives are required) Option 2 INDUSTRIAL MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE This program provides entry-level management skills to those entering or currently employed in first-level management or supervisory positions related to manufacturing. Core courses (18-22 units) plus: MGT 51, Communication in MGT 52, Human Behavior in Management (3) Organizations (3) (Fall only) or MGT 53, Organization and Management Development (3) MGT 56, Labor Management Relations (3) or MGT 59, Human Resources Management (3) (Spring only) MGT 71, Elements of Supervision (3) (No electives are required) Option 3 SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE This program provides entry-level management skills to those entering or currently employed in first-level management or supervisory positions within a small business environment. Those considering owning their own small business should select this option. Core courses (1 8-22 units) plus: BUS 18A, Business Law (3) MKTG 50, Principles of Marketing (3) MKTG 54, Introduction to Advertising (3) (Spring only) or MKTG 56, Salesmanship (3) or MKTG 58, Fundamentals of Retailing (3) or MGT 55, Purchasing and Materials Management (3) or MGT 80G, Management Consulting for Small Business Clients (4) MGT 58, Small Business Management (3) (No electives are required)
