146 Management Option 4 OFFICE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE This program provides entry-level office management skills to those entering or currently employed in first-level management office positions. Core courses (18-22 units) plus: CIS 80, Computer Information Science MGT 52, Human Behavior in MGT 57, Office Management (3) MGT 59, Human Resources Management (3) (Spring only) Plus up to 2 elective units in the Business, Computer Information Science, Management, Marketing, Office Technology, Real Estate, or Economics areas as needed to total 30 units. Seminars (1) Organizations (3) (Fall only) Associate Degree The major requirements for an associate degree in Management must be satisfied by completing one of the Management Certificates in addition to the associate degree requirements. Transfer An option in Management through a Business Administration major is available at CSU, Northridge. See the Business section of this catalog for course requirements. Management Courses MGT 12 *MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES TO MINORITIES AND SPECIAL GROUPS 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. This course is designed to identify and compare changes in the traditional American corporate culture. Students will study the special management problems that organizations encounter in employing minorities and other special groups such as women, older workers, undocumented workers, the disabled, and Viet Nam veterans. Topics will include personnel selection and placement, training, motivation, morale, the concept of cultural deprivation, the impact of racism and sexism on employment, and the interface between the white and minority worker in organizational settings. Current statutory and case law and administrative agency requirements will also be covered. (CSU, AVC) MGT 50 *MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. This course is designed for managers as well as those who work for managers. It includes an analysis of the principles and theories of management and organiza- tional behavior. Topics of study include managerial functions of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling; managerial processes of decision-making, leadership, motivation, and com- munication; diversity; managing quality; and the global business environment. (CSU, AVC) MGT 51 *COMMUNICATION IN MANAGEMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of MGT 50 and, Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A. Practical uses of the communication process within business and organ- izational settings (involving both written and oral communication). Identification of breakdown, barriers and corrective techniques including styles of conflict resolution and the stages of working out conflict, handling/ giving criticism, factors that affect group dynamics and organizational behavior. Special attention is given to the interpersonal nature of com- munication including effective listening skills, importance of nonverbal communication, effect of perception on communication, ways language/word choice can obstruct clear meaning. (CSU, AVC) MGT52 *HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN ORGANIZATIONS 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of MGT 50 and, Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. Introduction to the major concepts of the behavioral sciences and applications for managing people in organizations. Topics include: perception, motivation, commu- nication, conflict, leadership and group dynamics. Emphasis is placed on practical problem-solving through application of theories and principles. (CSU, AVC) MGT 53 *ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Organizations are increasingly confronted with rapid and unexpected change in todays society. This course is devoted to helping managers better develop themselves and their capabilities in order that they may improve organization effectiveness. Attention is given to methods managers can use in changing the structural, technical, and behavioral aspects of organizations. (CSU, AVC) MGT 55 *PURCHASING AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of MGT 50 and, Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2.
