Page 150 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California148 Mathematics Definition Mathematics is an important tool with which problems can be solved. Numbers, letters, or other symbols constitute the language of mathematics and, as in any language, are used to convey ideas and relationships. The final balance in a checkbook is a very simple example of this relationship between numbers, but when combined with more subtle relationships can lead to landing astronauts on the moon.
