Mathematics 149 Mathematics Courses MATH 60 *ARITHMETIC FUNDAMENTALS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for MATH 60. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs .) MATH 50 *ARITHMETIC 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH 60 or Eligibility for MATH 50. Adv sory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; measurement and the metric system; percent; consumer applications. (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) MATH A *ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA 4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH 50 or Eligibility for MATH A. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course is for the student who has not had previous training in algebra. Topics include operations with signed numbers, variables, algebraic expressions, linear equations, word problems, exponents, polynomials, special products and factoring, fractions, graphing, systems of equations, radicals, and solving quadratic equations. (AVC) MATH B *PLANE GEOMETRY 4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH A or Eligibility for MATH B. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course covers plane Euclidean geometry and the development of logical thinking and visualization skills. Includes study of geometric concepts and proofs, with emphasis given to those topics that are essential to further studies in mathematics. (AVC) MATH C *INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA 4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH A or Eligibility for MATH C. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading. This course is for the student who has had one year of high school algebra or one semester of elementary algebra at the college level. Topics include: algebraic functions, graphing, linear and quadratic equations and inequalities, systems of equations, rational exponents, logarithms, polynomials and factoring, rational expressions, conic sections, binomial expansion. (AVC) MATH D *PLANE TRIGONOMETRY 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH C or Eligibility for MATH D. Advisory: Completion of MATH B and Eligibility for College Level Reading. Topics include the trigonometric functions, solutions of triangles, fundamental identities, trigonometric equations, inverse trigonometric relationships, and complex numbers. (CSU, AVC) MATH X INDIVIDUALIZED MATHEMATICS 1-22 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: AVC Math Assessment Test. Individualized and self-paced study of high school through precalculus mathematics in a supervised environment. Includes any of the following: arithmetic, algebra, intermediate algebra, geometry, trigonometry, college algebra, and precalculus. See specific math courses for degree applicability and transferability. SELF-STUDY MATH 5 *PRECALCULUS 5 units 5 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH B and MATH C and MATH D or Eligibility for MATH 5. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading. This course is primarily for students who have completed intermediate algebra and who are preparing to study calculus or other mathematically oriented courses in such areas as economics, general business, chemistry, physics, engineering, biological sciences, and technical and vocational education. (CSU, UC, AVC) MATH 6 *COLLEGE ALGEBRA 4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MATH B and MATH C or Eligibility for MATH 6. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading. Theory of equations, including polynomial equations of higher degree; functions, inverse functions and their graphs, including exponential and logarithmic functions; systems of equations; determinants; inequalities; complex numbers; mathematical induction; sequences and summation notation; binomial theorem.
