Music Courses MUSIC 1 *MUSIC APPRECIATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. A study of very basic concepts of music theory, and an overview of the stylistic periods of compositions and their unique characteristics. Students will learn to recognize the sound of different orchestral instruments. Students will develop a historical perspective with reference to classical music, and be exposed to the most prominent composers represented in each style period. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 2 *FUNDAMENTALS OF MUSIC 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4R4 and ENGL 51BR2. A course designed to present foundation of music theory underlying the music of all cultures in all ages, including study of bass and treble clefs, identification of tonal center by recognition of key signatures, major and minor scales, basic rhythmic skills, construction of intervals, triads and seventh chords and their inversions, and application of the circle of fifths. Beginning composition, including historical and sociological context of styles and forms, is also part of the course. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 3A *KEYBOARD SKILLS I 2 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course provides an understanding of the principles of tonal organization essential to all musical expression from the earliest of cultures to the music of today. An introduction to the principles of playing the piano and reading music designed for persons with no keyboard or musical experience. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 3B *KEYBOARD SKILLS II 2 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 3A. A continuation of piano skills begun in Music 3A.
