164 Nursing Nursing Science Courses NS 1 PRINCIPLES OF NURSING SCIENCE 8 units 16 hours weekly (4 hours lecture, 12 hours laboratory) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of ANAT 1, PHYSIO 1 with a grade of "C" or better. Corequisite: ENGL 1A, MICRO 1. Introduction to nursing theory with presentation of the basic concepts of self- care theory. Fundamental nursing principles of patient care are presented within the self-care framework. Focus is on Orems Universal Requisite. Nursing process, pharmacology, nutrition and geriatric nursing are integrated. Major emphasis is on the acting for, doing for role of the nurse. Concurrent clinical experience in acute and skilled nursing facilities is provided. (CSU, AVC) NS 2A SELF-CARE: WOMEN AND NEWBORNS 4 units 16 hours weekly (4 hours lecture, 12 hours lab) (8 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of NS 1, MICRO 1, and ENGL 1A with a grade of "C" or better. Course is based on Orems Self-care Theory as applied to the care of women from the age of menarche throughout the life span. The concept that each patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own health maintenance and restoration, and with the child-bearing processes is presented. The course provides theory and guided clinical practice to promote an understanding of normal and pathophysiological processes in relation to women and their health; the self-care practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being of women and newborns; self-care practices that support a developmental environment for the growing fetus and neonate; and self- care practices and nursing actions that prevent deleterious effects from pathological conditions and events related to sexuality, the female reproductive system, and child-bearing. The supportive educative role of the nurse is emphasized with the goal of fostering the self-care agency of each patient. (CSU, AVC) NS 2B SELF-CARE THEORY AND PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC ILLNESS 4 units 16 hours weekly (4 hours lecture, 12 hours lab) (8 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of NS 1, MICRO 1, and ENGL 1A with a grade of C or better. This course is based on Orems Self-care Theory as applied to the care of patients with chronic illness. The concept that the patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own health maintenance, restoration, and prevention of complications is presented. The course provides theory and clinical practice to develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic diseases. The student learns self-care practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being, provide a developmental environment for patients continued development, and prevent harmful effects of either the illness or the health state requirements for the illness. The student is taught teaching/learning theory in order to perform the supportive/educative role of the nurse. (CSU, AVC) NS 3 NURSING TRANSITION 1.5 units 27 hours total Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program for LVN students and transfer students. Prerequisite: Completion of MICRO 1 and ENGL 1A with a grade of C" or better. This course is designed to ease the entry of the Licensed Vocational Nurse and/or transfer student into the second year of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The course provides an introduction to self- care theory and its application in the clinical setting. It integrates self-care theory with the nursing process. The course provides instruction in the development of nursing care plans, and will also provide for a math review with specific instruction concerning intra- venous medications. Threaded throughout the course will be information on study skills. (CSU, AVC) NS 3A DEVELOPMENTAL AND HEALTH DEVIATION RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH OF THE ADOLESCENT AND ADULT 3.5 units 19.5 hours per week for 5 weeks (6.5 hours lecture, 13 hours lab) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of NS 2A and NS 223 or completion of NS 3 for transfer and LVN students. This course is based on Orems Self-care Theory as applied to the care of the adolescent and adult patient with developmental and health deviation self- care requisites related to mental health. The concept that each patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own mental health maintenance and restoration is presented. The course provides theory and guided clinical SELF-CARE REQUISITES
