Prerequisite: Completion of VN51 and VN 53 with a grade of C or better. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Principles of medical-surgical nursing of PSYCH 55 or NF 1. 14 units 29 hours weekly (9 hours lecture, 20 hours lab) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to LVN Program. Prerequisite: Completion of VN 51 and BIOL 50 with a grade of C or better. Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in PSYCH 55 or NF 1. 6 units 190 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51AR2. Students will be required to take a physical exam. 3 units 54 total hours 166 Nursing the adult and the child, with integration of self-care theory throughout the course. Emphasis will be on diseases and conditions of the musculoskeletal, genitourinary, cardiovascular, blood, and respiratory systems, and care of the patient with cancer. Normal growth and development will be taught concurrently with clinical practice on a pediatric unit in an acute-care facility or other clinical setting. Concurrent clinical practice in the care of the adult in an acute-care facility or other clinical setting. (AVC) Principles of medical-surgical nursing with integration of self-care theory. Emphasis on diseases and conditions of the integumentary, reproductive, central nervous, special senses, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems. Concurrent clinical practice in the care of an adult in an acute- care facility or other clinical setting. (AVC) Nurse Aide Home Health Aide Courses A course in selected fundamental nursing skills needed to care for the hospitalized or home-bound patient. The course includes clinical practice in acute/skilled nursing home care facilities. Emphasis on the role and responsibility of the nurse aide and home health aide, safety principles, and infection control, basic patient care skills, and emotional, social and spiritual needs. Course approved by the California State Department of Health Services. After satisfactory completion of the course, a State examination is required for cer- tification. The current cost is $80. (AVC) AIDES This theory course is designed to provide basic information needed to provide drug therapy that is safe and effective for individuals with a wide variety of medical- surgical conditions. It is primarily for the nurse aide who seeks Vocational Nurse licensure through work experience and examination. Essential principles of pharmacology and pathophysiology are presented and correlated with specific nursing actions. This course will include principles of administration of medi- cations, computation of dosages and preparation of medications. The emphasis will include knowledge of commonly- used medications in health care and safety factors in administration of medications.
