This program provides the training necessary to perform successfully in the many and varied clerical, secretarial, and office administrative positions. These programs are designed to enable students to gain employment at the entry level in selected occupational areas, ranging from general clerk to administrative assistant, as well as provide opportunities for advancement in the field of office technology. Subjects available to students include typing, shorthand, business communications, secretarial procedures, machine transcription, word processing, and subjects related to both the legal and medical secretarial fields. Distinctive Features Up-to-date electronic equipment and curriculum reflect todays modern office and prepare students to enter this world of work easily and confidently. The variety as well as the flexibility of course offerings allows students to update skills, or acquire new job skills as needed. OT 60R4, Typing Speed and OT 72A/CA 42, Word Processing- Accuracy (1) Wordperfect (3) or OT 73A/CA 43, Word Processing-Microsoft Word (3) Career Options Administrative Assistant Administrative Secretary Clerk Typist Corresponding Secretary File Clerk General Clerk Legal Secretary Medical Secretary Receptionist Stenographer Technical Secretary Certificate Programs OFFICE TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE Students must have a C or better in all course work used to qualify for an Office Technology certificate. A maximum of 9 credit/no credit units will be accepted for an Office Technology Certificate. A minimum of 9 units of certificate course work must be completed at AVC. (Credit earned by examination will not be included in these 9 units.) The following eight core courses are required for any one of the four options in Office Technology: Office Technology Core (22-23 units) BUS 52A, Business English and Communications and BUS 52B, Business Communications (6) CA 30, Introduction to Microcomputers (3) or CA 1, Computer Concepts and Applications in Business (4) OT 42R4, Intermediate Typewriting (3) OT 47, Secretarial Procedures for the Electronic Office (3) or OT 48/MOA 48, Medical Office Procedures (3) or OT 49, Legal Office Procedures (3) Filing (3) OT 58, Records Management and Option 1 GENERAL OFFICE CERTIFICATE (31 units) This certificate provides general and basic entry-level skills to someone entering or currently employed in clerical occu- pations. Students are encouraged to continue into the Shorthand or Word Processing Certificates. Office Technology Core (22-23 units) BUS 46, Business Machines (2) BUS 50, Business Mathematics (3) or MATH 14, Math for Business and Economics (5) or MATH 5, Precalculus (5) or higher. BUS 55, Bookkeeping (3) or BUS 1A, Principles of Accounting (4) OT 53A, Introduction to Machine Transcription-Typewriter (1) or OT 54A, Introduction to Machine Transcription-Word Processor (1) plus: Option 2 WORD PROCESSING CERTIFICATE (33 units) This certificate provides advanced level training for persons presently employed or seeking employment in higher level secretarial and clerical positions. The emphasis is upon developing the Word Processing related skills.
