The emphasis is upon developing well-rounded secretarial skills. Office Technology Core (22-23 units) OT 42R4, Advanced Typewriting (3) OT 43A, Beginning Shorthand (4) OT 53A, Introduction to Machine Transcription-Typewriter (1) or OT 54A, Introduction to Machine Transcription-Word Processor (1) OT 72B, Advanced Wordperfect for Office Applications (3) plus: Option 4 ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE (34 units) This certificate prepares individuals for employment as an office manager or managerial assistant in automated office environments. Office Technology Core (22-23 units) BUS 50, Business Mathematics (3) or MATH 14, Math for Business and Economics (5) or MATH 5, Precalculus (5) or higher. Principles of Accounting (4) Organizations (3) (Fall only) plus: BUS 55, Bookkeeping (3) or BUS 1A, MGT 52, Human Behavior in MGT 57, Office Management (3) Associate Degree The major requirements for an associate degree in Office Technology must be satisfied by completing one of the Office Technology Certificates in addition to the associate degree requirements. Transfer An option in Office Systems is available through a Business Administration major at CSU, Northridge. See Business section for course requirements. Office Technology Courses OT 42R4 *BEGINNING TYPEWRITING 3 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This competency-based course is designed for the beginning typist to develop speed and accuracy in typewriting. It includes exercises in the application of typewriting to specific business situations. (CSU, AVC, 2+2) OT 42R4 *INTERMEDIATE TYPEWRITING 3 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of Beg Typing (30 GWAM) and Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This competency-based course is designed to develop applied typewriting skills and techniques as required for vocational use in the business world. (CSU, AVC) OT 42R4 *ADVANCED TYPEWRITING 3 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of Int Typing (40 GWAM) and Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This competency-based course is designed to develop speed and accuracy in typewriting. Typed material is organized and prepared in specialized secretarial fields according to individual interest and vocational needs. (CSU, AVC) OT 43A BEGINNING SHORTHAND 4 units 5 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of Beg Typing or concurrent enrollment and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. A beginning course in Gregg shorthand. Designed for students who are beginners in shorthand or who cannot take new-matter dictation at 60 WAM. Includes instruction and review in the fundamental theory of shorthand. (CSU, AVC) OT 47 *SECRETARIAL PROCEDURES FOR THE ELECTRONIC OFFICE 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of Beg Typing or Ability to type 35 GWAM and Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 50BR4. This course is designed to put a finishing touch on your secretarial skills as they are applied in the electronic office. You will be introduced to the latest electronic innovations within the modern office including data and word processing operations and electronic commun- ications. This course will also present how to properly prepare for meetings, make travel arrangements, complete job applications and resumes, as well as how to improve your communication and human relations skills. (CSU, AVC) OT 48 *MEDICAL OFFICE PROCEDURES Same course as MOA 48. 3 unit 3 hours Advisory: Completion of Beg Typing or Ability to type 35 GWAM and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2 and BUS 50 or MATH 50. Instructional materials fee required for this course and must be paid at registration. Medical Office Procedures is designed to provide a thorough understanding and offer practical application of the skills needed as a front office medical administrative assistant. This course will cover telephone procedures, appointment scheduling, patient records, filing, basic knowledge of medical terminology, handling of office communication, processing mail, office maintenance and management responsibilities, fees, posting, credit, collections, introduction to the computer and information processing in the medical office and preparation for a position as an administrative medical assistant.
