Astronomy Courses ASTRON 1 *ASTRONOMY 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for College Level Reading, ENGL 1A and MATH C. Survey of solar system and stellar astronomy. Topics include ancient astronomy star charts, survey of each planet in our solar system, features of our Sun, measuring physical properties of stars, stellar evolution, galaxies, and structure and origin of the universe. (CSU, UC, AVC) ASTRON 1L *ASTRONOMY LABORATORY 1 unit 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for College Level Reading, ENGL 50BR4 and MATH C. Laboratory applications of principles discussed in Astronomy 1. Classroom projects illustrate laws of optics as related to telescopes, the construction and use of starcharts, processes that have sculptured landforms on other planets, and how star light is analyzed to deduce physical properties of stars and galaxies. (CSU, UC, AVC) Chemistry Courses CHEM 1A GENERAL CHEMISTRY 4 units 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CHEM 2A or high school chemistry, Completion of MATH C, and Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 50BR4. A general course dealing with the fundamental principles of chemistry and applying these principles mathematically and descriptively to a study of chemistry of the elements. (CSU, UC, AVC) CHEM 1AL GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB 1 unit 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CHEM 2A or high school chemistry with a grade of C or better, and MATH A, and Eligibility for College Level Reading. Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 1A Lecture and ENGL 50BR4. An experimental general laboratory course dealing with the fundamental principles of chemistry. The course will emphasize in the lab experimentally chemical prin- ciples, preparations and uses of the common elements and compounds and some of their common reactions. (CSU, UC, AVC) CHEM 1B GENERAL CHEMISTRY 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CHEM 1A Lecture/Lab and MATH 5 or MATH 6, and Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A. The second half of a general course dealing with the fundamental principles of chemistry and applying these principles mathematically and descriptively to a study of Chemistry of the elements. (CSU, UC, AVC) CHEM 1BL GENERAL CHEMISTRY SAS LAB 2 units 6 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CHEM 1A Lecture Lab and MATH5 or MATH 6, and Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A. Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in CHEM 1B Lecture. An experimental general laboratory course and Problem Session on problem solving dealing with the fundamental principles of chemistry. The course will emphasize in the SAS the ability to solve problems being covered in the lecture. In the laboratory will cover chemical principles, prep- arations and uses of the common elements and compounds.
