18 Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements Graduation from Antelope Valley College with the associate in arts or associate in science degree requires the completion of at least 60 semester units, including requirements 1 through 5 listed below. Antelope Valley College awards the associate in science degree to students who pursue majors offered in the following divisions: Allied Health, Applied Academics and Technologies, Business, and Mathematics/Science. The associate in arts degree is available to those students who pursue a major in Letters, Arts, and Sciences, and to those majors offered in the following divisions: Fine Arts/Family and Consumer Education, Language Arts, Physical Education, and Social Science. In the course description section of this catalog all courses that apply to the associate degree or certificates are designated as (AVC). The study major will be noted on the students permanent transcript and diploma. The completion of an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Sciences degree does not ensure that a student can transfer directly to a four-year college or university. Students interested in transferring should refer to the Transfer Requirements section in this catalog beginning on Page 23. Filing for Graduation Antelope Valley College awards degrees once a year following the Spring Semester. An application for the degree must be filed in the Student Services Center by the third Friday in March. After submitting the application students will receive a formal evaluation of progress toward the degree. During the Spring Semester students will receive information on participating in the graduation ceremony. While participation in the graduation ceremony is encouraged, it is not necessary to attend to receive a diploma. Diplomas are mailed to students during the summer. Early filing of the graduation application is highly recommended. Credit Courses Not Applicable to the Associate Degree and Certificate Programs Effective Fall 1988, selected credit courses that do not require essays, specified hours of homework, independent study, English or Mathematics prereq- uisites and critical thinking skills shall not apply to the associate degree and certificate programs. If completed prior to Fall 1988 these courses can apply to associate degree and certificate programs. Students who enroll in credit courses not applicable to the degree can use these credits for eligibility purposes, i.e., full- time status, intercollegiate athletic status, and financial aid status. In the course description section of this catalog these courses are designated as (Credit course not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs.) All courses that do apply to the associate degree or certificates are designated as (AVC). The list of credit courses not applicable to the associate degree and certificate programs include: ENGL 50AR4, Basic Composition ENGL 51AR2, Intermediate Reading ENGL 61R2, Grammar ENGL 62R2, Basic Writing Skills ENGL 63R2, Vocabulary ENGL 64R2, Spelling ENGL 65R2, Study Skills ENGL 66R2, Basic English Grammar EOPS 60R4, Enrichment Class ESL 40, English as a Second ESL 51R2, English as a Second Language Arts Mini Courses: Language Basic English Skills Language Pronunciation and Vocabulary Building GUID 53A, College Survival Skills GUID 53B, Career Planning LRN SKLS 90R4, Development LRN SKLS 91R4, Employability MATH 50, Arithmetic Learning Skills Learning Skills GAIN MATH 60, Arithmetic Fundamentals NA 66, Pharmacology for Certified PE 51R4, Academic Skills and Nurse Aides Guidance for the Intercollegiate Athlete 1. General Education Requirements General Education (GE) is designed to introduce the students to the variety of means through which people comprehend the changing world. It reflects the conviction of Antelope Valley College that those who receive their degrees must possess in common certain basic principles, concepts, and methodologies both unique to and shared by the various disciplines. College educated persons should be able to use this knowledge when evaluating and appreciating the physical environment, the culture, and the society in which they live. Most importantly, GE should lead to better self understanding. Criteria for GE Requirements for the Antelope Valley associate in arts and associate in science degrees: A. Courses or a combination of courses which meet general education philosophy and objectives will: 1. Provide an introduction to basic concepts, principles, and method- ology of study common to a given discipline; 2. Lead to better self understanding in relationship to the physical environment, culture, economy, and society; 3. Provide an opportunity to examine values while proposing solutions for major social problems; 4. Provide a breadth of knowledge and experiences which contribute to a well-rounded education. B. Natural science courses present critical thinking and problem solving and the relationship of people and science; C. Social and behavioral science courses stimulate critical thinking about people, their society, and how societies and subgroups operate;
