Page 201 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster CaliforniaPublic Works 199 Definition The Public Works curriculum is designed to prepare students to work in the highway maintenance service area for the California Transportation Department, and to upgrade persons now employed in public works. Students are advised to supplement this curriculum with civil technology and construction technology courses. Distinctive Features All public works courses are parallel and equivalent to similarly numbered and titled courses at all community colleges in California which offer Public Works programs. Career Options Highway Construction and Maintenance Road Construction and Maintenance problems related to street and highway maintenance including trees, weed control, traffic signs, sewers, storm drains, refuse collection, etc. (AVC) Certificate Programs Certificate not available. PW 51 STREET AND HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of PW 50. Inspection and maintenance of equipment and materials used in street and highway construction. Emphasis on Portland cement concrete, surface drainage, traffic signs, safety, highway design, sources of revenue, laws and codes. Includes management principles, budget prep- aration, equipment records, inspection, surface treatments, and maintenance Associate Degree Associate degree not available. Transfer Not a transfer major. Public Works Courses considered.
