Speech Communication 205 Definition Oral communication skills are a vital part of everyday life as well as a distinct asset in the academic and business worlds. The Speech Communication program offers instruction in the art and science of human communication. The intent of the program is to provide the student with an understanding of theory, research, and application in various aspects of the communication process. Jane Combs Patti Delesante Jill McGrady Damin Murray Program Description The basic course, SPCO 1, helps students improve their formal speaking skills. It satisfies the Oral Communication requirement for transfer to the California State University system and the Communication and Analytical Thinking requirement for the associate degree. SPCO 3 also fulfills the California State University system Oral Communication requirement for IGETC. Courses designed to help students polish speech skills through oral interpretation, improve their ability to interact more effectively with others in interpersonal or small group situations, and explore the many facets of mediated communication are also available. Distinctive Features The program allows students to explore the many contexts of human communication (interpersonal, intercultural, group, public, mass). Students are exposed to many different teaching techniques and a variety of learning opportunities. Students work individually and in small groups, participate in class discussions, and speak in front of groups. Critical thinking and collaborative learning are stressed. Career Options The ability to organize ones thoughts and present them with clarity and precision is an asset in all careers. Communication skills are especially applicable to the following occupations: Cinematic Careers Copy Writer Corporate Communication Director Counselor Entertainer Interviewer Labor Relations Arbitrator Lawyer Legislative Assistant Lobbyist Manager Personnel Manager Public Information Officer Public Relations Specialist Radio/TV Announcer Reporter Salesperson Script Writer Sportscaster Supervisor Teacher (all levels and all disciplines) Television Careers Theatre (Many of these careers may require education beyond the two-year college level.) Certificate Program Certificate not applicable. Associate Degree An associate degree with a major in Communication or Speech Commu- nication is available. A minimum of 24 units are required. (See Graduation/ Associate Degree Requirements.)
