Page 208 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California206 Speech Communication Speech Communication Courses SPCO 1 *INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC SPEAKING 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The basic course in public speaking provides instruction in the principles of the strategic uses of oral communication and gives students practical experience in organizing and analyzing their ideas, critiquing the oral messages of others and active listening. (CSU, UC AVC) SPCO 2 *ORAL INTERPRETATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. A course in theory and practice of effective oral reading, training in selection and analysis of literature; techniques of visible and audible expression. (CSU, UC, AVC). SPCO 3 *PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. An analysis of the theories, practices, and processes of group communication (two person communication; small group communication; organizational commu- nication and mass communication). (CSU, UC, AVC) SPCO 4 *INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The course deals with the analysis of cultural factors in communication. The communication of various non-dominant cultures within the United States (African- Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, Women, the Disabled, and Homosexuals) will be examined and compared to the communication of the dominant culture. International communication, with regard to the global village, will also be addressed. Diversity will be celebrated and issues of racism, sexism, and other prejudices will be discussed. (CSU, UC, AVC) SPCO 5 *INTRODUCTION TO MASS COMMUNICATION Same course as JOUR 5. 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The course will provide an overview of the contexts and theories pertaining to mass communication in the United States from its beginnings to the present. The roles, rights, responsibilities, and influences of mediated communication will be addressed. Areas of study will include the print media (newspapers, magazines, wire services), electronic media (radio, television, recordings, film), advocacy (public relations, advertising), legal and ethical restraints, and special topics in mass com- munication (e.g., minorities and the media). Because this is an area of study that literally changes daily, the course will be sensitive to current trends and uses of the media in our everyday lives. (CSU, UC, AVC) SPCO 15 *CRITICAL THINKING AND COMMUNICATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The special skills of critical thinking and reasoning are an important part of daily reactions to what you hear, think, and read. This course is designed to enable students to create valid and well-supported arguments; to understand and improve their own reasoning processes; and to effectively critique the arguments presented by others. While the course is not designed to teach formal debating skills, informal strategies for advocating and arguing positions will be honed. (CSU, UC, AVC) SPCO 40 *INTRODUCTION TO INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The course deals with basic theories of interpersonal cornmunication and gives students an opportunity to investigate how they use communication in their own interpersonal relationships. Although the primary focus of the course is on dyadic communication, intrapersonal communi- cation will be dealt with as a preface to communicating with others. Areas that will be covered include interpersonal perception, nonverbal communication, message formation, communication competence, power, persuasion, and conflict reduction. How interpersonal communication is affected by differences in age, gender, and culture will also be addressed. (CSU, UC, AVC) SPCO 45 *GENDER AND COMMUNICATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The course deals with the analysis of communication in terms of gender. The communication of women will be examined and compared and contrasted with that of men. Further, the com- munication of women from various non- dominant cultures within the United States (e.g., African-Americans, His- panics, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and Lesbians) will be examined.
