Courses in the humanities present the ways in which civilization has responded in artistic and cultural creation and develop aesthetic understanding and making value judgements; E. Courses in language and rationality present principles of languages which lead toward logical thought, clear and precise expression, and critical evaluation of communication; F. Courses or a combination of courses in the performing and visual arts and physical education provide both theory and practice; G. Courses in foreign language must include substantive content of the culture of the relevant country; H. Ethnic studies and multi-cultural courses are offered in at least one of the required general education categories; I. Courses which emphasize occupa- tional competency do not meet general education objectives; J. Courses which meet study major requirements are not double counted as meeting general education requirements; K. Courses may not be counted more than once for general education requirement purposes; L. Only lower division unit credits meet general education requirements. Appropriate upper division courses may be counted to satisfy completion of an area requirement but the unit credits cannot be counted toward meeting the unit credit requirement for that area. The student would need to take sufficient lower division courses for unit credit to make 21 units. Requirements: A minimum of 21 units, including a minimum of 3 semester units or 4 quarter units in Areas A, B, C, D1, D2, E, and F. AREA A -Natural Sciences Courses in the Natural Sciences are those which examine the physical universe, its life forms, and its natural phenomena. To satisfy the General Education Requirement in natural sciences, a course shall be designed to help the student develop an appreciation and understanding of the scientific method, and encourage the understanding of the relationships between science and other human activities. To satisfy the general education requirement in social and behavioral sciences, a course shall be designed to develop an awareness of the method of inquiry used by the social and behavioral sciences. It shall be designed to stimulate critical thinking about the ways people act and have acted in response to their societies and should promote appreciation of how societies and social subgroups operate.
