Page 210 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California208 Technology TECH 53B *ELECTRICAL 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: completion of TECH 50, TECH 52, TECH 53A, and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Build on the students knowledge of electrical theory and wiring practices to install, repair, and maintain electrical problems including power/lighting systems. Records of amps, volts, and watts will be kept. The student will be instructed to utilize this information to lower number of emergency repairs and facilitate better utilization of power in the commercial setting. Formulas necessary to understand the electrical theory and application are presented as they are needed throughout the class. Close attention will be paid to the National Electrical Code. (AVC) WIRING-COMMERCIAL TECH 53C *ELECTRICAL 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 50, TECH 52, TECH 53B, and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Build on the students knowledge of electrical theory and apply this knowledge to present-day equipment in an industrial setting. Close attention will be paid to the National Electrical Code requirements and emphasis will be placed on installation, maintenance and industrial application of electrical equipment and controls. The class will learn new electrical symbols, theory, and progress through such topics as systems wiring, generators, transformers and motors. The basic formulas necessary to understand electrical theory and applications are presented as they are needed throughout the class. (AVC) WIRING-INDUSTRIAL TECH 53D *ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTROL 2 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 50, TECH 52, and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. Build on the students knowledge of electrical theory and apply this knowledge to electrical motor control. Close attention will be paid to the National Electrical Code and NEMA requirements. Emphasis will be on installation, maintenance and modification of electrical motor control, presented in a present-day setting. The student will learn new electrical symbols, theory, and progress through such topics as circuit layout, control pilot devices, control circuits, reduced voltage starters and multispeed controllers. Formulas necessary to understand and work with the electrical theory and applications are presented as they are needed throughout the class. (AVC) TECH 54DR2 *ADVANCED MOTOR CONTROL PRACTICUM 1 unit 4 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of TECH 530. This course will build on the students knowledge gained in TECH 53D. It will encourage design and construction of motor controllers; and expand on control concepts into the program logic control field. (AVC) TECH 80 *WATER SUPPLY AND TREATMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. A basic course in water supply and treatment covering historical develop- ment of water quality control practices; water sources; public health aspects of water supply; water chemistry; water treatment mathematics; chemical treatment; filtration; softening; cor- rosion; disinfection; tastes and odors in water; water bacteriology; pump operation and maintenance; valves and meters. The content of this course is specifically designed to serve those individuals preparing for the Grade II and Grade III Water Treatment Operator and Water Distribution Certification examinations given by the Calif. State Health Department and A. W. W .A., respectively. (AVC) TECH 81 WATER SYSTEM OPERATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 80, and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH A. A course in water supply hydraulics with emphasis on type, location, construction, operation, testing and maintenance of wells, pumping stations, and facilities, distribution systems, water flowmeters, recorders, automatic equipment actuating devices and controls, detection of water losses in mains and pipeline repairs, fireflow requirements and Underwriters ratings. The content of this course is specifically designed to serve those individuals preparing for the appropriate Water Treatment Operator and Water Distribution Certification examina- tions given by the California State Health Department and A.W.W.A., respectively. (AVC) TECH 82 WATER UTILITIES PRACTICES 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of TECH 81, and Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2 and MATH C.
