210 Theatre Arts Definition Theatre has played an important role in the examination of values in western society since the Golden Age of Greece. Through the ages, theatre has both reflected upon and questioned the basic tenants of the societies in which it flourished. Theatre has also found many forms for expression including serious drama, comedy, musicals and opera, poetic drama, and the many stylized forms that have evolved in the last century. Contemporary theatre is varied in both its styles of writing and production as well as the range of producing organizations. Every major metropolitan area boasts resident professional companies, major touring show facilities, experimental theatres, and community and educational theatre programs. In addition, modern technology has made first-class theatre available to all areas via television, video, and motion pictures.
