Page 37 of Antelope Valley College 1995-1996 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster CaliforniaCampus Services 35 Instructional Multimedia Center (IMC) Ext. 202 The Instructional Multimedia Center (IMC), located within the library building, contains equipment and media for student and faculty use. Students are encouraged to use the IMC as a resource for term paper research, to reinforce and improve study skills or for personal growth. The IMC houses media from all disciplines ranging from How to Master Algebra to Driving Miss Daisy -all the right tools to help students study smart and get better grades. Learning Center The Learning Center programs are designed to provide enrolled students academic support for academic and vocational classes as well as assistance with the development of basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. An equally important mission of all Learning Center programs is to provide students a variety of collegiate level study strategies which assist them in developing effective study plans and provide them timely assistance in preparing for and taking exams. The Learning Centers integrated learning assistance programs include ESL, the Math Lab, Reading Lab, Study Strategies Program, Tutoring Program, Writing Center, and the DSS High Tech Center. These programs provide services in a variety of ways: one-on-one tutorials, group tutorials, workshops and reviews, mini courses, computer-assisted instruction, consultation with a Learning Specialist, consultation with a LD Technician or Study Strategies Tutor, use of typewriters and computers for word processing, video and audio cassettes, and other self instructional materials. ESL Ext. 625 The ESL Program, a collaborative effort on the part of Language Arts and the Learning Center, provides scheduled conversation groups and composition groups to students enrolled in ESL classes. These services are to enhance classroom instruction provided at various ESL levels by Language Arts. The scheduled composition groups and the conversations groups meet in available classrooms. Each semester a schedule of these meetings is available in the Learning Center. Math Laboratory Ext. 341 A Math Laboratory is located among the math classrooms in the 600 building. Help is available on a drop-in basis for students who are enrolled in math classes. In addition to personnel who answer questions, there are self-instructional materials, including video and audio cassettes. All students are encouraged to come to the lab to explore and discuss any math topics that are of interest to them. Reading Laboratory Ext. 215 An individualized remedial program is offered which is designed to help students improve their language arts skills. Instruction is also available to the more advanced student who wants to develop critical reading and study skills. Besides formal instruction, the laboratory makes available to enrolled students self- instructional and tutorial programs designed to eliminate deficiencies in reading skills. Programs for improvement in general comprehension, reading, vocabulary, spelling, and study techniques are provided. The Reading Laboratory is located in the Learning Center. Tutoring Program Ext. 307 The Learning Centers Tutoring Program, located in the Learning Center, provides group tutoring appointments, review sessions, and exam preparation assistance to any full- or part-time students who have ASO (Associated Student Organization) cards or are served through the EOPS Program. Eligible students can request appointments Monday through Friday during day hours, and one evening per week. Small group appointments are available in the following areas: applied academics, biological and physical sciences, business, foreign languages, mathematics, music, and social sciences. A tutor who specializes in assisting students who have concerns about poor test performance or anticipate they need tips on preparing for upcoming exams, the Postmortem Tutor, is also available on an appointment basis. Several typewriters housed in the Learning Center are available at posted hours to AVC students who wish to type assignments. Writing Center Ext. 338 A Writing Center, located within the Learning Center, is open five days a week on a drop -in basis. Trained tutors are available to assist writers (beginning through advanced) in planning and preparing writing assignments across the curriculum, revising for clarity, and overcoming deficiencies in their writing.[close] |
