36 Campus Services Word processors, instructional materials, and software are available to help students polish their writing skills. Other Learning Center Services The Learning Center helps to provide a variety of other related academic support services. Also located in the Learning Center, the DSS High Tech Center, Ext. 405, provides one-on-one tutoring, computer-assisted instruction, and untimed tests for DSSs learning disabled program participants. The Reading/Study Strategies Program, Ext. 307, housed in the Learning Center, provides reading assistance, by appointment, to groups in the content areas under the direction of a certificated reading instructor. GAIN Program Ext. 297 The GAIN Program, supervised by the Dean of Applied Academics, provides eligible participants classroom instruc- tion, tutoring, and computer-assisted instruction in adult basic education skills and GED preparation. Library Ext. 201 The College Library contains a collection of books and periodicals to support Antelope Valley Colleges academic and vocational programs. It is an excellent place to develop critical thinking and lifelong learning skills as well as explore areas for personal growth. Librarians are available to assist students in meeting their research needs. The Library maintains a quiet study environment. Limited English Proficiency Program Ext. 241 For persons whose native language is not English, Antelope Valley College offers both daytime and evening classes in English as a Second Language. Students with a background in a language other than English may obtain assistance by contacting the ESL counselor. The ESL counselor can assist students with information regarding ESL assessment, academic and career planning, and program services. Appointments with the counselor may be scheduled by coming into the Counseling Center. New Directions Ext. 240/165 New Directions makes the college more accessible to students and community members by providing information about campus services, programs, and activities, and by conducting college orientation sessions and campus tours. The Antelope Valley College re-entry program, named New Directions, assists students who are returning to school after an interruption in their education. A variety of classes and support services are provided to help make the students transition back to an academic envi- ronment as smooth as possible. Classes: College Survival Skills, Career Planning, and Personal Development. Counseling: Educational- to help students choose classes and plan academic programs. Vocational- to help students formulate job and career goals. Personal- to help students resolve personal problems that may interfere with college success. Special Events: Lectures, workshops, and films on subjects of special interest to re-entry students; mutual support groups. Learning Disabilities Program Ext. 278 Special services and individual counseling are available for students with learning disabilities. Students experi- encing significant difficulty in one or more of the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning, or mathematical skills, despite good overall ability, may be eligible for this program. Students who qualify may receive a number of support services. Services available include tutorial support, liaison with instructors, special arrangements for testing, use of tape recorders, recorded textbooks, notetakers, academic and vocational advisement, and registration assistance.
