An introduction to the field of Law Enforcement; which includes the police, courts, attorneys, corrections and jails, probation and parole, and alternatives to traditional punishment. The course takes a brief look at the evolution of law and the processes of its administration. The controversies over what causes criminal conduct are explored. (CSU, AVC) ADM J42 POLICE- COMMUNITY RELATIONS 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. Develop understanding of police- community relations. Appreciate the purpose and objectives of good police- community relations. Study causative factors and problems related to police- community relations. Understand the role of community groups, agencies, and law enforcement. (CSU, UC, AVC) ADM J43 POLICE ADMINISTRATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. Specialized training for peace officers in supervisory positions or those in preparation for such positions. It treats the various accepted standards of organiza- tion, administration, training, and selection of police officers now in force in American police systems. Emphasizes current problems of police administration and the principles of management and organization. (CSU, AVC) ADM J44 NARCOTICS CONTROL 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. History, identification and effects of narcotics, current narcotic problems. Special consideration will be given to laws affecting the control of narcotics and methods of investigating violations of narcotic law violations. Students will learn street language, undercover and surveillance procedures, and how to write a search warrant. (CSU, AVC) ADM J45 CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. A practical course in the investigation of different types of crime. Emphasis is on basic investigation techniques which includes but is not limited to the study of identifying and collecting evidence, development of informants, interview and interrogation techniques and the utilization of scientific laboratory analysis. (CSU, AVC) ADM J 46 CRIMINAL LAW 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. An examination of the Criminal Law both substantive and procedural as found in the various California State Codes and as interpreted by our courts. The course begins with the origin and development of law, including the English Common Law, the U.S. and California Constitutions, State Laws, and finally the largest body of law-case decisions. The distinction between torts and crimes; felonies and misdemeanors and venue and jurisdiction. Crimes against persons, property and victimless will be examined with emphasis on those most commonly committed. (CSU, UC, AVC) ADM J47 CRIMINOLOGY 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4 and ENGL 51BR2. This course explores the nature, organization, and consequences of the criminal justice system in America developed within the context of American politics and public policy making. Topics explored include the myths and realities about crime and criminal behavior, definitions of crime and its measurement, and the varieties of criminal behavior. Criminological theories of criminal activity are examined as the effort is made to find relevance and meaning of these theoretical constructs with the actual patterns of criminality. The role of law enforcement is also explored. The prison system is examined, including the problems of overcrowding and the possibilities of rehabilitation. Alternatives to prison are also evaluated. Other topics to be covered include the problems of protection and providing for witnesses at criminal trials, the issues involving victims and their concerns, and the reinstitution of capital punishment in most American states. More importantly, it is critical to examine and evaluate the changing nature of criminal patterns in America and ascertain the meaning and implications of these changes for the future of American society.
