Production of beef cattle in the United Agriculture/Animal Science 57 Definition The Animal Science program is designed to prepare students for occupations in animal husbandry and related occupations. Scot Binns Lloyd Brown Program Description This program is designed to prepare students in all phases of general animal husbandry. Distinctive Features Students enrolled in the animal science certificate program receive hands-on experience in all areas of animal husbandry. Persons who are interested in animals will find these courses interesting and beneficial. Career Options Beef Producer Horse Husbandry Sheep Producer Swine Producer (Some of these careers may require education beyond the two-year college level.) Certificate Program The following courses (27 units) are required for the certificate: AG 75, Soils and Plant Nutrition (3) AG 81, Beef Production (3) AG 82, Sheep Production (3) AG 83, Livestock Judging (2) AG 84, Fitting and Showing (3) AG 85, Feeds and Feeding (3) AG 86, Horse Husbandry (3) AG 87, Swine Production (3) BIOL 1, 1L, General Biology/Lab (4) Associate Degree The major requirements for an associate degree in Animal Science may be satisfied by completing a minimum of 18 units from the required certificate courses. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) Transfer A bachelors degree in Animal Science is available at Calif. State Univ., Fresno and Calif. Polytechnic State Univ., San Luis Obispo. A student planning to pursue a bachelors degree should check the appropriate catalog(s) and consult a counselor. Agriculture/Animal Science Courses AG 80 *INTRODUCTION TO ANIMAL SCIENCE husbandry designed for use as either an introductory course for people interested in livestock or as a refresher course. Organized around the general activities of livestock production including breed identification, feeding and management, genetics and veterinary skills. (CSU, AVC, 2+2) AG 81 *BEEF PRODUCTION 3 units States and California with emphasis on local conditions. The principles and practices of purebred and commercial beef production on farm and range. Areas to be covered will include: breeds, market classes and grades, selection, feeding, care, management and marketing for breeding animals, feeders, and fat cattle. (CSU, UC, AVC) AG82 *SHEEP PRODUCTION The sheep industry in the United States and California with emphasis on local conditions. Principles and practices of purebred and range sheep production including: feeding, breeding, manage- ment, housing equipment, marketing, wool clip, and record keeping will be covered. (CSU, UC, AVC) AG 83R2 *LIVESTOCK JUDGING Designed to develop ability to judge and select livestock including beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, swine, and horses. Experience will be given in keeping scoreboards, placement into appropriate classes, and reasons for selection. (CSU, AVC) AG 84 *FITTING AND SHOWING This course will cover the techniques in selecting, fitting, and showing beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, and horses. Actual practice will be given by working on animals as well as trips to college field days. (CSU, AVC)
