62 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Definition Air Conditioning and Refrigeration is a constantly changing, self gratifying program designed to satisfy the mechanically oriented person. The goal of the AC R program is to provide entry level skills in the rapidly growing service industry. A student may specialize in either air conditioning or refrigeration. A combination of both is recommended. Alternate energy concepts are included in the commercial refrigeration and residential air conditioning courses. State of the art electronics, as used in this industry, is included in the commercial air conditioning course. Distinctive Features Students perform tests and repairs on actual equipment as well as built-up trainers. Field trips to various course related installations are taken, familiarizing students with actual application. Career Options AC R Contractor Dispatcher Manufacturers Service Representative Sales Engineer Service Engineer Service Manager Service Technician (Some of these careers may require education beyond the two-year college level.) Certificate Programs The air conditioning and refrigeration curriculum is designed to provide pre- employment instruction in the manipulative skills, technical knowledge, and related trade information which will prepare the student for employment in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Refrigeration Specialist Certificate The following courses (26 units) are required for the certificate: AC R 41A and 41B, Domestic AC R 42A and 42B, Commercial TECH 50, Fundamentals of Electricity* (4) WELD 61, Welding Fundamentals* (2) Refrigeration (10) Refrigeration (10) Air Conditioning Specialist Certificate The following courses (26 units) are required for the certificate: AC R 43A and 43B, Residential Air AC R 44A and 44B, Commercial Air TECH 50, Fundamentals of Electricity* (4) WELD 61, Welding Fundamentals* (2) Conditioning (10) Conditioning (10) Air Conditioning Refrigeration Specialist Certificate The following courses (46 units) are required for the certificate: AC R 41A and 41B, Domestic AC R 42A and 42B, Commercial AC R 43A and 43B, Residential Air AC R 44A and 44B, Commercial Air TECH 50, Fundamentals of Electricity* (4) WELD 61, Welding Fundamentals* (2) Refrigeration (10) Refrigeration (10) Conditioning (10) Conditioning (10) *Classes need to be taken once only to qualify for any or all certificates. All certificate courses require a grade of "C" or better to qualify. Supporting courses: AC R 99R, Work Experience (1-4) MGT 58C, Management for Small SPCO 15, Critical Thinking and Business (1) Communication (3) TECH 53A, Electrical Wiring TECH 53B, Electrical Wiring Residential (3) Commercial (3) Associate Degrees The major requirements for an associate degree in Air Conditioning and Refrig- eration may be satisfied by completing a minimum of 20 units from the certificate programs. These 20 units must be from the list of required courses rather than the list of supporting courses. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) Transfer Not a transfer major. Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Courses AC R 41AB DOMESTIC REFRIGERATION 10 units 20 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4, ENGL 51AR2, and MATH 50. Study of refrigeration fundamentals including heat transfer, energy, and the basic refrigeration system necessary to the understanding of the refrigeration cycle of domestic refrigerators and freezers. Fundamentals of electrical diagrams in domestic refrigerators and freezers. Course also includes repair of electrical circuits and maintenance of specialized circuitry of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. (AVC) AC R 41A DOMESTIC REFRIGERATION 5 units 10 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4, ENGL 51AR2, and MATH 50. Study of refrigeration fundamentals including heat transfer, energy, and the basic refrigeration system necessary to the understanding of the refrigeration cycle of
