Child and Family Education 91 Child Family Education Courses CFE 1 *INTRODUCTION TO PRESCHOOL EDUCATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading. This course is designed to give the student a broad overview of the preschool in todays society. Students will learn about the role of the preschool as a means of promoting social and emotional well being in Children. (CSU, AVC) CFE 2 *THE PRESCHOOL CHILD 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of CFE 1 and Eligibility for College Level Reading, ENGL 1A and MATH 50. A course designed to teach basic child growth and development theory. Patterning of behavior and home, preschool and early elementary school will be studied as well as the effects of interaction of parents, children and teachers upon one child. This course will assist students preparing to become teachers of young children by providing information and coping skills for working with young children. It is a required course for the certificate in Early Childhood Education and the School-Age Child. (CSU, AVC) CFE 3 *THE CHILD IN FAMILY/COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 2. The school-age child in the family and the influence of his total environment on growth and development. Effects of social change on child, family, peer groups, and community. Impact of social class and its relationship to family behavior, interactions between various social systems, day care and its effects on childrens development and socialization. (CSU, UC, AVC) CFE 4 *LITERATURE FOR THE YOUNG CHILD 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading. A course designed to promote an appreciation of the value of childrens literature in the growth and development of the child through the sixth grade, to study a brief history of childrens literature, and to develop the techniques of effective presentation of childrens verse and stories. It is an integral part of the certificate program in Early Childhood Education and the School-Age Child. (CSU, AVC) CFE 5 *PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of CFE 2. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading, and ENGL 50BR4. Application of the principles of child growth and development to the nursery school curriculum. Includes a study of appropriate learning experiences for young children, development of nursery school materials and equipment. (CSU, AVC, 2+2) CFE 6 *CREATIVE EXPERIENCES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading, and ENGL 1A. A course designed to develop an understanding of young children and their creative needs. It also provides techniques and experiences suitable for developing the potential of creativity in young children. (CSU, AVC) CFE 7 *SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION OF NURSERY SCHOOLS I 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of any six units in CFE courses. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A and MATHA and on- the-job experience in preschool, daycare, or before-and-after school age care. This course is designed to teach the principles and processes related to the supervision and operation of preschools. An overview of areas covered will include: organizational structures, budgeting, examination of staff-administration relationships, staff in-service, relation- ships with parents, records, reporting, relationships with community resources, relationships with regulatory agencies. (CSU, AVC) CFE 8 *SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION OF NURSERY SCHOOLS II 3 units 3 hours weekly Prerequisite: Completion of any six units in CFE courses. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 1A and MATHA andon- the-job experience in preschool, daycare, or before-and-after school age care. This course is designed to provide the student with an in-depth study of the administration of programs for young children. Areas covered will include: personnel management, proposal writing, advocacy, Titles V and XXII guidelines, current research in field of early childhood education, professional involvement, updating of regulatory laws and licensing. This course provides three of the six units in supervision and administration required to direct publicly funded child care centers and after-school care. (CSU, AVC)
