Page 119 of Antelope Valley College 1996-1997 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California118 Economics Definition Economics is concerned with the study of how people and societies produce various commodities and distribute them for consumption, now or in the future, among various persons and groups in society. The economics program includes the study of the American economic system, using techniques for the analysis of contemporary economic problems. There is an emphasis on developing the ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating public policy issues. Jay Harman Program Description Economics provides both a general academic experience and professional preparation. The program emphasizes economic analysis, institutions and policy in American, regional, and urban settings. Distinctive Features Economics is designed to facilitate the students matriculation to the four year colleges or to provide an understanding of the economic world we live in. Key concepts and methodology for analysis are emphasized. Certificate Program Certificate not applicable. Associate Degree An associate degree with a major in Economics is not available. Economics courses can be included in the 18 units necessary for an A.A. degree with a major in Letters, Arts, and Sciences. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) Transfer A student planning to pursue a bachelors degree should complete the following courses prior to transfer. Economics Major-CSU, Northridge NOTE: No grade lower than C will be accepted on transfer from another inst itution to sa ti s f y d e p a r t m ent requirements. BUS 1A, IB, Principles of Accounting (8) ECON 1A, lB, Principles of Macro and Macroeconomics (6) MATH 14, Math for Business and Economics (5) or MATH 7A, Calculus and Analytic Geometry (5) MATH 10, Linear Algebra (3) Electives: Lower division foreign language courses may apply in the major as well as some math. Students planning to attend graduate school are encouraged to take MATH 7A, 7B, and 10. NOTE: Requirements may vary at other institutions. Check the appropriate catalog(s) and consult a counselor. Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for MATH A. An introductory analysis of basic macroeconomic concepts. Emphasizes national income theory and accounting, the Federal Reserve system, and the causes of growth, inflation and unemployment. Includes an investigation of political and banking (financial) policies used to stabilize economic growth and control inflation.
