Staff College Phone 943-3241 Program Advisement: David Greenleaf Ext. 530 Administrative Secretary: Kate Forsyth Ext. 124 Adjunct Faculty: Gary Cothran Kelly Cothran Karen Fathy Darlene Wynkoop Program Description The instructional aide program (1) provides the student with the skills, knowledge, and understanding that is n e e d e d t o b e c o m e a s u c c e s s f u l paraprofessional teachers aide and (2) a s s i s t s t h e c o n t i n u a l v o c a t i o n a l development of teacher aides by providing for the updating of skills needed in todays school environment. Distinctive Features Students earn work experience credit in the instructional aide program through work experience in the public school setting. The American Sign Language courses teach the language used by the deaf, and include discussion about the deaf culture and problems experienced by deaf people. ED 40 provides valuable information to students contemplating a career in teaching. ED 45 equips students with knowledge and skills in working with the learning disabled. Career Options Instructional Aide Interpreter (Signer) Teacher (Some of these careers may require education beyond the two-year college level.) Certificate Program Instructional Aide Certificate (24 units) Any appropriate combination of the following courses may be used with the required courses for a total of 24 units or more. Required Courses: (15 units) ED 40, Introduction to Education (3) ED 43, Introduction to Special Education (3) ED 45, Understanding and Educating the Learning Disabled (3) Select at least 6 units from the above. CA 30, Introduction to Microcomputers* (3) PSYCH 1, General Psychology (3) or PSYCH 55, Human Behavior (3) PSYCH 35, Child Psychology (3) or CFE 3, The Child in Family/ Community Relationships (3) * Prior computer experience helpful. Electives: CFE 4, Literature for the Young Child (3) CFE 6, Creative Experiences for Young Children (3) ED 30, American Sign Language I (4) ED31, American Sign Language II (4) ED 99R, Work Experience (1-4) ENGL 1A, Freshman Composition (3) or ENGL 50BR4, Intermediate Composition (3) ENGL 22, Vocabulary Building (2) ENGL 47, Speed Reading (2) ENGL 51BR2, Critical Reading and Study Skills (3-4) MATH A, Elementary Algebra (4) or higher. MUSIC 2, Fundamentals of Music (2) OT 42R4, Beginning Typewriting (3) Associate Degree The requirements for an Instructional Aide major for the associate degree may be satisfied by completing a minimum of 18 units from the certificate program. Of these 18 units, at least 12 units must be from the required list of courses rather than the list of elective courses. (See Graduation/ Associate Degree Requirements.) Transfer A student planning to obtain a multiple subject teaching credential (elementary school) should check the appropriate catalogue(s) and consult with a counselor. ED 30 *AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I 4 units 5 hours weekly Reading Prerequisite: ENGL 51BR2. Writing Prerequisite: ENGL 50BR4. As part of the American Eligibility for Eligibility for Sign Language (ASL) course sequence, ASL I is designed mainly to introduce ASL, a visual-gestural language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and, more importantly, to focus on the development of basic conversational skills, emphasizing receptive abilities. (CSU, AVC) ED 31 *AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE II 4 units 5 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of ED 30. As part of the American Sign Language (ASL) course sequence, ASL II is designed for students who wish to develop or enhance their proficiency in ASL usage. The course stresses development of basic conversational skills with emphasis on vocabulary and expressive skills. (CSU, AVC) ED 32 *AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE III 4 units 5 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of ED 31. This course is designed for students to acquire communicative competency in ASL.
