The main emphasis is to bring the students ASL fluency to a point of self-generated ASL for the purpose of furthering language use in ASL. (CSU, AVC) ED 33 *AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE IV 4 units 5 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of ED 32. Advanced study of ASL grammar. Further development and refinement of ASL skills and fluency. Accentuates aspects of deaf culture and community through spontaneously generated conversations. (CSU, AVC) ED 35 *CULTURAL AWARENESS OF THE DEAF 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of ED 31. Discussion of various aspects of the American Deaf Culture, including description of deafness, deaf people and the deaf community as defined by audiology and/or cultural means, services for and by deaf people, and culture as reflected in the language of deaf people. (CSU, AVC) ED 40 *INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. A survey course for those who wish to enhance their understanding of the public school system or who are considering a career in education. The course includes an overview of the role of education as an institution in our society. Historical influences on education, responsibilities of teachers, certification requirements, and career opportunities are among the topics covered. (CSU, AVC) ED 42A *BEGINNING TUTORING Same course as COMM 43A (SPCO 42A). 1 unit 35 hours total Reading Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. The theory and practice of group communication (two person and small group) in an educational setting. This course covers tutorial ethics and philosophy, the steps of the tutorial (the tutor cycle), the basics of tutorial communication, and tutoring students with special needs, The course is designed for students working as tutors or instructional aides. It is accepted for the instructional aide certificate and required for the tutorial certificate. A student completing the course will be certified internationally as a Regular Tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). (CSU, AVC) ED 42B *ADVANCED TUTORING Same course as COMM 43B (SPCO 42B). 1 unit 35 hours total Course Prerequisite: Completion of ED 42A. The theory and practice of group communication (two person and small group) in an educational setting. This course covers a review of ED 42A, learning styles, adult cognitive development, probing questions, and tutoring in the subject/skills area. The course is designed for students working as tutors or instructional aides. It is accepted for the instructional aide certificate and required for the tutorial certificate. A student completing the course will be certified internationally as a Advanced Tutor through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). (CSU, AVC) ED 43 *INTRODUCTION TO SPECIAL EDUCATION 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course is specifically designed for prospective special-education teachers, parents, volunteers or aides interested in gaining basic information about the major d i s a b i l i t y g r o u p i n g s i . e . , m e n t a l retardation, visual impairment, communication disorders, etc.) in relationship to special education. The course will cover the history of the disabled, theories, current trends and techniques used in working with the disabled. (CSU, AVC) ED 45 UNDERSTANDING AND EDUCATING THE LEARNING DISABLED 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course is specifically designed for prospective special education teachers or aides, community volunteers or workers, or anyone interested in having a better understanding of the learning disabled. The course will range from a history of the learning disabled in the public schools to definitions, theories, testing, current trends and techniques in working with the learning disabled. (CSU, AVC) ED 99R *WORK EXPERIENCE 1-4 units hours vary Prerequisite: Completion of 12 units of college work, and registration in a total of 8 units in courses leading to a major related to work experience assignment, and approval of instructor supervising work experience area. Provides combined related vocational classroom instruction with on-the-job employment experiences directly related to a students occupational objective.
