170 Music MUSIC 3C *KEYBOARD SKILLS III 2 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 3B. A continuation of piano skills begun in Music 3A and 3B. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 3D *KEYBOARD SKILLS IV 2 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 3C. A continuation of piano skills begun in Music 3C. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 4A MUSIC WRITING AND ANALYSIS I 3 units 3 hours weekly Reading Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. A study of chord construction, chord progressions, harmonic phrase structures, and melodies, and four-part writing. Some beginning orchestration and composition of simple pieces within the constraints of forms being studied. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 4B MUSIC WRITING AND ANALYSIS II 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 4A. A thorough study of traditional voice leading in four-part choral writing, traditional methods of writing harmonic progressions, a basic tour of historical style periods, traditional usages of the dominant seventh, diminished seventh, and halfdiminished seventh chords, basic modulation techniques, study of the function of non-dominant seventh chords, study of secondary dominant and leading tone chords, and a survey of Blues, Boogie, and Jazz techniques. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 5A MUSIC WRITING AND ANALYSIS III 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 4B. Reading Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. A one-semester course designed to parallel the Form and Analysis course offered at four-year institutions. Musical forms, from motivic germs to schematic plans for large symphonic works, are studied in detail. Students will learn techniques for analyzing works harmonically, melodically, and structurally, and will be expected to incorporate material mastered in MUSIC 4A and 4B into their listening and reading experiences over the course of the semester. Listening to and studying scores from the basic classical repertoire predominate the activities for daily class assignments, midterms, and final exams. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 5B MUSIC WRITING AND ANALYSIS IV 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 4B or MUSIC 5A. A one-semester course designed to parallel the Tonal Counterpoint course offered at four-year institutions. Students will study the contrapuntal techniques of J.S. Bach, and will be expected to incorporate material mastered in MUSIC 4A, 4B, and 5A into their listening and reading experiences over the course of the semester. Writing progressively more complicated original contrapuntal works in the style of J.S. Bach predominates the class assignments during the semester. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 6A MUSICIANSHIP I 2 units 3 hours weekly Reading Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4. A study of the aural aspect of music theory. Development of the ability to identify intervals, chords, scales, and chord progressions aurally is emphasized, as eartraining and sightsinging placement exams are given at the end of each academic year at four-year institutions. Students will learn techniques for correct transcription of basic melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic passages played in class, and will sightsing progressively more difficult solfege and sightsinging exercises. (CSU, UC, AVC) MUSIC 6B MUSICIANSHIP II 2 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of MUSIC 6A. A study of the aural aspect of music theory. Continuation of MUSIC 6A. Development of the ability to identify intervals, chords, scales, and chord progressions aurally is emphasized, as ear-training and sightsinging placement exams are given at the end of each academic year at four-year institutions.
