214 Political Science POL SCI 2 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICAL SCIENCE 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. This course deals with the study of politics, government, and the discipline of political science. Topics dealt with include defining, describing, and analyzing what is meant by politics, government, and political science, the nature of scientific and political inquiry, the origins, history, development, and approaches to the study of politics, and the substantive areas of political science. (CSU, UC, AVC) POL SCI 3 COMPARATIVE GOVERNMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Comparative analysis of the major political systems and institutions. Emphasizes the nature of democracy, capitalism, socialism, fascism and communism. This course will also discuss the theory of anarchism and ideologies of the Third World. Procedurally, the course stresses varied reading and sources. (CSU, UC, AVC) POL SCI 5 CONTEMPORARY INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. This course examines and evaluates the contemporary international community and addresses the current problems, issues, and trends within the global arena. There is POL SCI 10 ETHNIC POLITICS IN AMERICA 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. This course offers an examination and evaluation of the political power and powerlessness of Americas diverse ethnic communities. This American experience of these groups will be examined along with the political realities and dynamics of each groups role within the American governmental and political system. The ethnic groups to be reviewed include American native peoples, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians. The changing demographic nature of America will provide the backdrop of explaining the new political forces emerging as the result of the new American ethnic diversity. The power, powerlessness, and role of Americas ethnic groups will be examined at the national, state, and local levels. (CSU, UC, AVC) a review of the development of the post- World War II political system and the subsequent alteration of the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union. Recent and current global issues, problems, and challenges are examined as well as a focused overview of particular regional concerns. These include the Middle East, Central America, and South Africa, although other regional conflicts will be examined within the context of the international political and economic system. Moreover, the course examines various international and regional organizations that act as an infrastructure in the attempt to bring international and regional stability and order in the contemporary world. Finally, the course explores the status of the contemporary international community in the coming decade and into the next century. (CSU, UC, AVC) POL SCI 12 PROCESS 3 units 3 hours weekly THE JUDICIAL Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. This course explores and evaluates the American judicial system, including Californias judicial process. The class examines the nature, structure, and functioning of the American judicial system within the context of Americas governmental and political organization. Specific topics to be included in this course are the nature of political jurisprudence, the origins of the Anglo-American system of law, the political setting of the judiciary, and the organization of the federal and California court system.
