218 Psychology PSYCH 33 PERSONAL AND SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. A course that studies personality of adjustment by studying the major theories and issues in the field of psychology. Emphasis is placed on the dynamics and development of normal and abnormal emotional adjustments, personality dynamics and usefulness of psychotherapy. The practical orientation of the course emphasizes communication, interpersonal relationships and the subjective self that evolves from experience. Students will also develop research skills, so they can read and write in a scientific manner. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 34 INTRODUCTION TO PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. An introduction to the concept that both psychological experience and overt behavior are the result of nervous system function. This course explores both neuroanatomy and neurological terminology. The research methods of the physiological approach will be examined, and the limitations of the assumptions of this approach will be emphasized. (CSU, AVC, UC pending) PSYCH 35 CHILD PSYCHOLOGY 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of PSYCH 1 or PSYCH 55. Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. The course surveys the emotional, physical, and social development of the c h i l d f r o m conception through adolescence. Major psychological theories are reviewed as they currently influence the developmental field. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 40 PEER-MENTOR COUNSELING 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. Train students to effectively counsel middle school and community college students with daily living issues. Students will be given an opportunity to study the peer helping orientation which will be utilized to provide better understanding of their applications in a middle school or a college campus. Students will become familiar with counseling theories and research skills that facilitate their ability to apply and critique current research. (CSU, AVC) PSYCH 43C ISSUES IN PSYCHOLOGY: COUNSELING TECHNIQUES 1.5 units 27 hours total Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. Understanding of counseling in human services area of education, nursing, or business management. To better u nderstand hum a n v a r ia b l es a nd personality. To gain skills in the counseling field, understand behavioral strategies and treatment models as well as counseling techniques. To practice communication techniques through peer counseling. (CSU, AVC) PSYCH 43D ISSUES IN PSYCHOLOGY: STRESS MANAGEMENT 1.5 units 27 hours total Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. A cognitive exploration of the nature and sources of stress in daily living and an experiential opportunity to participate in a variety of stress reduction techniques and activities designed to help manage stress without the use of drugs. (CSU, AVC) PSYCH 44 INTRODUCTION TO COUNSELING 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. An introduction to a variety of growth centered helping processes intended to foster personal improvement, enhance interpersonal relationships, and to develop awareness of and sensitivity to the problems of others. (CSU, AVC) PSYCH 55 HUMAN BEHAVIOR 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 50AR4 and ENGL 51AR2. An introduction to a broad spectrum of subject areas covering topics such as learning, personality, perception, motivation, stress and aggression. (AVC)
