Cal Grant A This is available to students planning to attend four-year colleges. It will be held in reserve while attending a community college. The award can vary from $594 to $4,452 per academic year when the student transfers to a four-year school. Cal Grant B This is available to low income, disadvantaged students and can be used at a two or four-year institution. The average award (based on fill-time enrollment) is $1,196 per academic year for living expenses. Tuition/fee award at four-year institutions will range from $594 to $4,452 per academic year. Cal Grant C This is for vocational students only. This grant can only be used at a two-year school or vocational institution. The average award at AVC is $449 per academic year. The student applies for the Cal Grant Program prior to March 2nd, preceding the next academic year they will enroll. Instructional Multimedia Center (IMC) Ext. 202 The Instructional Multimedia Center (IMC), located within the library building, contains equipment and media for student and faculty use. Students are encouraged to use the IMC as a resource for term paper research, to reinforce and improve study skills or for personal growth. The IMC houses media from all disciplines ranging from How to Master Algebra to Driving Miss Daisy all the right tools to help students study smart and get better grades. Learning Center Ext. 375 The Learning Centers integrated programs are designed to provide enrolled students academic support for academic and vocational classes as well as assistance with the development of basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. An equally important mission of all Learning Center programs is to provide students a variety of collegiate level study strategies which assist them in developing effective study plans and provide them timely assistance in preparing for and taking exams. The Learning Centers integrated programs provide assistance through the ESL Conversation Groups, Math Lab, Reading Lab, Study Strategies Program, Tutoring Program, Writing Center, and DSS High Tech Center. These programs provide services in a variety of ways: l l l l l l l l l l one-on-one tutorials, group tutorials, workshops and reviews, mini courses, computer-assisted instruction, consultation with a Learning Specialist, consultation with an LD Technician or Study Strategies Tutor, use of typewriters and computers for word processing, video and audio cassettes, and other self instructional materials. ESL Conversation Groups Ext. 625 The ESL Conversation Groups, a collaborative effort on the part of Language Arts and the Learning Center, provide scheduled conversation groups to students enrolled in ESL classes. These services are to enhance classroom instruction provided at various ESL levels by Language Arts. The scheduled conversation groups meet in the Learning Center. Each semester a schedule of these meetings is available in the Learning Center. GAIN Program Ext. 297 The GAIN Program (Greater Avenues for Independence) provides eligible participants classroom instruction, tutoring, and computer-assisted instruction in adult basic education skills and GED preparation. Math Laboratory Ext. 341 A Math Laboratory, located within the Learning Center, provides tutoring on a drop-in basis for students who are enrolled in math classes. In addition to personnel who answer questions, there are selfinstructional materials, including video and audio cassettes. Students enrolled in Math X, a self-paced individualized program of math assistance, are provided testing, tutoring, and review of tests through the Math Lab. Reading Laboratory Ext. 377 An individualized remedial program is offered which is designed to help students improve their language arts skills.[close] |
