The communication of various non-dominant cultures within the United States (African- Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, Women, the Disabled, and Homosexuals) will be e x a m i n e d a n d c o m p a r e d t o t h e communication of the dominant culture. International communication, with regard to the global village, will also be addressed. Diversity will be celebrated and issues of racism, sexism, and other prejudices will be discussed. (CSU, UC, AVC) COMM 21 *BEGINNING NEWSWRITING Same course as JOUR 12. 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. An introduction to the theories and techniques of newswriting and reporting. Instruction and practice in news and feature story structures, newspaper style, copy reading, and elementary editing. This is the first course required of journalism majors. (CSU, UC, AVC) COMM 23R3 *NEWSWRITING AND REPORTING Same course as JOUR 23R3. 3 units 6 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of COMM 21/JOUR 12. Developing news sources, interviewing techniques, newswriting, feature and editorial writing, editing and photography skills using the college newspaper as a laboratory. This course may be repeated for a maximum of 9 units. (CSU, UC, AVC) COMM 25 *PHOTOJOURNALISM Same course as JOUR 25. 1 unit 18 hours total Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Advisory: Knowledge of photography. An introductory course integrating photography and journalism as they apply to newspaper and magazine marketing sources. The course will focus on preparing an illustrated layout article. S t u d e n t s w i l l p r e p a r e a p a c k a g e manuscript that would be appropriate for newspaper or magazine publishing. The course includes visual demonstrations and field trips. (CSU, AVC) COMM 28 *INTRODUCTION TO TELEVISION Same course as TH A 4. 3 units 4 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This course is designed to develop the students ability to interpret television and video in terms of form and style. Students are introduced to relevant television history, theory and practice as a means of developing an appreciation of television as an art form. Representative texts will be screened to support the focus of each class and will serve as a springboard for analysis and discussion. (CSU, AVC) COMM 31 *INTRODUCTION TO FILM Same course as TH A 3. 3 units 4 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. An introduction to one of the most powerful cultural and social communications mediums of our time, cinema. Topics include film production, form, and styles, as well as critical analysis of film, and film history. The films, texts, and classroom materials cover not only American culture during the last century, but also make the students aware of the culture, politics, and social history of the periods portrayed in the films. The class lectures, discussions, and readings will be supplemented by screening of representative films. (CSU, UC, AVC) Communication Arts 105 COMM 34R4 *INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING Same course as ENGL l0C/TH A 34R4. 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. An introductory screenwriting course in which students will get practical experience writing film scripts. Lectures will include practical as well as theoretical discussions involving screenwriting and film in general. Students will be required to read each others work and will also be exposed to professionally produced film scripts. (CSU, UC, AVC) COMM 36 *CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN INDEPENDENT FILM 4 units 4 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 1A. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A. This course will introduce students to contemporary American independent film and its makers. Students will examine both the positive and negative factors that influence filmmaking outside the Hollywood studio system. Students also will examine and evaluate how independent themes communicate different messages about American culture to the American audience. The course will pay particular attention to a rising wave of women, minority, and gay and lesbian filmmakers producing short and feature narrative, documentary, and experimental film and video.
