Nursing 189 Applicants should consider carefully their abilities to meet the demands of this rigorous program, i.e., young children who become ill or need the time and attention of the parent, proper transportation from the campus to the health agencies, time necessary to complete homework, demands of work, family, health and leisure in relation to the demands of being a student. Careful consideration of finances and time essential to completing the program are stressed. A student enrolled in the nursing program may be allowed to reenroll in the program twice. Unsuccessful completion or withdrawal from any subsequent course, or failure to progress for any reason, will result in the student not being allowed to continue in the program. Admission to Antelope Valley College does not guarantee admission to the Vocational Nursing Program. Minimum Eligibility Requirements for All Applicants: 1. Antelope Valley College Assessment Scores eligibility for ENGL 50BR4, ENGL 51BR2, and MATH A or minimum grade of C in appropriate college courses: ENGL 50AR4, ENGL 51AR2, and MATH 50. 2. Graduation from high school or an approved equivalent. 3. Satisfactory health verified by a licensed physician or certified nurse practitioner. Please do not take the physical examination until so directed by the Dean of Allied Health and Math/ Science. Final acceptance will be dependent on the results of the physical examination. 4. Submission of application to the Allied Health Division on appropriate forms. Check brochure for deadlines. All courses to be considered in the evaluation should be completed prior to submission of the application. Credit by challenge examination, or credit by equivalence, is possible. Pervious education must be documented by official records. A petition is required. Application Procedure It is important to complete the following: l Submit application to the Allied Health D i v i s i o n w i t h i n t h e s p e c i f i e d application period. Refer to the nursing brochure (available in the Allied Health Division) for specific application period. l Submit Antelope Valley College assessment scores, showing eligibility for ENGL 50B, ENGL 51B, and MATH A. Submit one set of official high school and college transcripts with your application to the Allied Health Division, and another set should be on file in the college Student Services C e n t e r . S t u d e n t s m u s t a c c e p t responsibility to contact high school(s) and college(s) previously attended for official transcripts. This should be done early in the application process. l Submit an evaluation by an Antelope Valley College counselor, if courses have been completed at other colleges. Foreign transcripts (high school and college) must be evaluated for United States equivalency by a credentials evaluation service. A subject and grade breakdown is required. The high school evaluation must state that the student has the equivalent of senior high school graduation in the United States. A list of these services can be obtained from the Dean of Admissions or the Secretary of Allied Health. l Every item in this application procedure is extremely important, and an oversight of any item will prevent you from being considered for admission to the program. l Submission of an application does not guarantee admission to the program. Screening of All Applicants: Criteria which are used to establish priority for selection into the Vocational Nursing program at Antelope Valley College follow: 1. Each applicant who meets the minimum requirements of the program becomes part of a pool of applicants and is selected by lottery. Applicants are identified by social security number and their numbers are drawn until the class is filled. 2. Please note that a waiting list is not maintained for this program. If s t u d e n t s a r e n o t a c c e p t e d , a reapplication is required during the next application period. 3. Students are accepted into the program every 18 months. 4. The physical examination shall be taken after conditional acceptance into the program. The purpose of the examination is to insure the absence of any communicable disease and to insure that the candidate is able to perform the work to be required in the program. 5. Established procedures for the resolution of grievances is set forth in B o a r d P o l i c i e s 5 0 3 0 , S t u d e n t Discipline, and 9046, Complaints. The following courses (51 units) are required for the Licensed Vocational Nursing certificate: * BIOL 50, Elementary Human Anatomy and Physiology (3) 54 hours theory: 48 hours lab * NF 1, Nutrition (3) 54 hours theory * PSYCH 55, Human Behavior (3) 54 hours theory VN 5 1, Self-Care: Fundamentals and Pharmacology (14) 192 hours theory; 3 18 hours clinical VN 52, Nursing to Promote Self-Care Agency in the Adult, the Child, and the Dependent-Care Agent 14) 192 hours theory; 3 18 hours clinical VN 53, Nursing to Promote Self-Care Agency in the Adult Patient and the Child-Bearing Family (14) 192 hours theory; 3 18 hours clinical (738 hours theory; 954 hours clinical: 1692 total hours) *These courses may be taken prior to enrollment in the program.
