190 Nursing Vocational Nursing Courses VN 51 SELF-CARE: FUNDAMENTALS AND PHARMACOLOGY 14 units 29 hours weekly (9 hours lecture, 20 hours lab) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to LVN Program. Course Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in BIOL 50 or completion with a grade of C or better. Advisory: Completion of MATH A. Fundamental nursing principles of adult patient care. Beginning nursing process, self-care theory, nutrition, pharmacology, geriatrics, and adult growth and development are integrated throughout the course. Concurrent clinical practice in acute and skilled nursing facilities. (AVC) VN 52 NURSING TO PROMOTE SELF-CARE AGENCY IN THE ADULT, THE CHILD, AND THE DEPENDENT-CARE AGENT 14 units 29 hours weekly (9 hours lecture, 20 hours lab) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to LVN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of VN51 and VN 53 with a grade of C or better. Course Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in PSYCH 5.5 or NF 1 or completion with a grade of C or better. Principles of medical-surgical nursing of the adult and the child, with integration of self-care theory throughout the course. Emphasis will be on diseases and conditions of the musculoskeletal, genitourinary, cardiovascular, blood, and respiratory systems, and care of the patient with cancer. Normal growth and development will be taught concurrently with clinical practice on a pediatric unit in an acute-care facility or other clinical setting. (AVC) VN 53 NURSING TO PROMOTE SELF-CARE AGENCY IN THE ADULT PATIENT AND THE CHILD-BEARING FAMILY 14 units 29 hours Weekly (9 hours lecture, 20 hours lab) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to LVN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of VN51 and BIOL 50 with a grade of C or better. Course Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in PSYCH 55 or NF 1 or completion with a grade of C or better. Principles of medical-surgical nursing with integration of self-care theory. Emphasis on diseases and conditions of the integumentary, reproductive, central nervous, special senses, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems. Concurrent clinical practice in the care of an adult in an acutecare facility or other clinical setting. (AVC) Associate Degree Nursing Program Registered Nursing The Associate Degree Nursing Program can be completed in four academic semesters. The curriculum meets the requirements of the Board of Registered Nursing for eligibility to apply for the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX), and the requirements of Antelope Valley College for eligibility to apply for an Associate Science Degree in Nursing (ADN). Students need to be admitted to the Nursing Program in order to enroll in the nursing classes. All nursing courses include classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience in local hospitals and health agencies in each of the four semesters. For successful completion of the program, a minimum grade of C is mandatory in all required courses for the program. Students are responsible for the purchase of textbooks, uniforms, course outlines, and malpractice insurance. Students must provide their own transportation. Current cost sheets for the program are mailed with the acceptance letters. The faculty recommends the Hepatitis B vaccine for nursing students. Vaccines are available at a cost to the students. Registered Nurses who lack California licensure and Vocational Nurses who are licensed in the State of California can meet state licensing regulations through this program. Credit by equivalency is available. Applications for advanced standing applicants must be submitted during the time indicated. LVNs, foreign graduates needing to meet BRN licensing requirements, and transfer students will be admitted in the fall semester only. All nursing applicants must be in satisfactory physical and mental health, and be able to carry out all duties in the clinical area. This means students shall be free of any physical disabilities or emotional problems which would interfere with normal progress in learning and a c c e p t i n g t h e u s u a l d u t i e s and responsibilities of a nursing student. This includes freedom from substance dependency. A physicians written approval to continue in the program will be required for any student who becomes pregnant. The student must be under medical supervision during the pregnancy and postpartum period. The student must be able to participate in all learning experiences. Any student who becomes ill during the program, may, upon request of the faculty, be required to obtain a written statement from his/her physician verifying the students ability to continue in the program without any activity restriction. A student enrolled in the nursing program may be allowed to re-enroll in the program
