Page 197 of Antelope Valley College 1998-1999 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster CaliforniaNursing 195 The concept that the patient should be involved to the extent permitted by his/her self-care agency in the decisions and activities related to his/her own health maintenance, restoration, and/or prevention of complications is presented. The course provides theory and related clinical practice to develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of these acute illnesses to assist in the prediction of commonly expected self-care deficits. The student learns self-care practices and nursing actions which enable the development and implementation of an appropriate nursing system to provide the nurse agency required to meet the patients self-care deficits. The requirement of nurse agency in acute illness to promote the patients health and well-being, provide a developmental environment for the patients continued development, and prevent harmful effects of either the illness or the health state requirements of the illness is emphasized. (CSU, AVC) NS 4 LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT SKILLS IN THE CARE OF ADULTS WITH HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE REQUISITES 14 units 30 hours weekly (6 hours lecture, 24 hours laboratory) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of NS 3A, NS 3B and NS 3C. This course is based on Orems Self-Care Theory as applied to the care of adults with health deviation self-care requisites. This course provides theory and related clinical practice to develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of these health deviations. Leadership, management skills and community health are presented and practiced in order to prepare students to select appropriate nursing systems to care for groups of patients. Professional issues such as ethics and values, law, the Nurse Practice Act, etc., are incorporated during the course. (CSU, AVC) Nurse Aide Home Health Aide Courses HHA 65 HOME HEALTH AIDE (formerly NA-HHA 65, Nurse Aide- Home Health Aide) 1 unit 40 hours total Prerequisite: Completion of NA 65 or current Certified Nurse Aide certificate. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51AR2. California drivers license recommended. Required: TB skin test within past year. Students may be required to take a physical exam. A course in selected fundamental nursing skills needed to care for the home-bound patient. The course includes clinical practice in a long-term care facility and home care facility. Emphasis on the role and responsibilities of the home health aide, safety principles, infection control, basic patient care skills, and emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Course approved by the California State Department of Health Services. Certification as Home Health Aide awarded upon successful completion. (AVC) NA 65 NURSE AIDE (formerly NA-HHA 65, Nurse Aide- Home Health Aide) 5 units 162 hours total Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51AR2. Required: TB skin test within past year. Students may be required to take a physical exam. A course in selected fundamental nursing skills needed to care for the long-term care patient. The course includes clinical practice in a long-term care facility. Emphasis on the role and responsibilities of the nurse aide, safety principles, infection control, basic patient care skills, and psycho-social needs. Course approved by the California State Department of Health Services. After satisfactory completion of the course, a State examination is required for certification. The current cost is $80. (AVC) NA 66 PHARMACOLOGY FOR CERTIFIED NURSE AIDES 3 units 54 total hours Limitation on Enrollment: Must be a Certified Nurse Aide. Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 51BR2. This theory course is designed to provide basic information needed to provide drug therapy that is safe and effective for individuals with a wide variety of medicalsurgical conditions. It is primarily for the nurse aide who seeks Vocational Nurse licensure through work experience and examination. Essential principles of pharmacology and pathophysiology are presented and correlated with specific nursing actions. This course will include principles of administration of medications, computation of dosages and preparation of medications. The emphasis will include knowledge of commonlyused medications in health care and safety factors in administration of medications.
