Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A An introduction to the personal and social behavioral makeup of the Chicano persona. Special emphasis will be on personality development and those factors which contribute to its unique formation. Other topics emphasized will be the Chicano culture, psychological assessment, interpersonal conflicts, sociopsychological problems and bilingual/ bicultural experiences. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 12 *HUMAN SEXUALITY 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A and Completion of PSYCH 1 or PSYCH 55 or PHIL 5. This course surveys biological, sociological, and psychological influences on current sexual attitudes and behavior. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 15 *PSYCHOLOGY OF PREJUDICE 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A The course is designed to clarify the nature of human prejudice by surveying relevant psychological research, theory, and research skills. These concepts will be utilized to better understand their applications to groups, such as blacks, Hispanics, the handicapped, and other traditional victims of prejudice. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 17 *THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MEN 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A This course will explore the psychological and physiological aspects of the male experience. Particular focus will be directed toward historical archetypes and expectations; biological determinants of personality, especially as concerns sex and aggression; mens health problems and disabilities; the need for power and control; problems with intimacy; healthy and unhealthy male reactions to changing gender roles; special issues for homosexual males; psychological dimensions of men of color (Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian). Both male and female students are encouraged to enroll. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 18 *THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WOMEN 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A This course will present an introduction to the psychology of women. Topics will focus on the myths of women and issues regarding their socialization and psychology. Discussion material will range from research methods, stereotypes, roles, psychological well-being, how females function in the workplace, and women of color. Major issues regarding women will be explored through both theory and current research. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 19 *DYNAMICS OF SEX AND GENDER Same course as SOC 45. 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A This course is designed to explore the development of sex and gender roles focusing on the similarities and differences for females and males. The attention on sex roles as a result of contemporary societal shifts will be examined as will the impact of these changes on the family, the work place, education, and leisure activities. (CSU, UC, AVC) PSYCH 30 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY Same course as SOC 30. 3 units 3 hours weekly Writing Prerequisite: Eligibility for ENGL 50BR4. Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading or satisfactory completion of ENGL 1A, and Completion of PSYCH 1 or PSYCH 55 or SOC 1. This course studies human interaction, and emphasizes the influence of the social context on behavior and experience. The course addresses the traditional social psychological topics such as social cognition, person perception, attitude formation and change, persuasion, conformity, group processes, pro-social behavior, attraction, aggression, and prejudice. Furthermore, the course will consider more recent applications of social psychological theory and research in the legal and health systems. The methods used to study the above will also be addressed.
