Topics include film production, form, and styles, as well as critical analysis of film, and film history. The films, texts, and classroom materials cover not only American culture during the last century, but also make the students aware of the culture, politics, and social history of the periods portrayed in the films. The class lectures, discussions, and readings will be supplemented by screening of representative films. (CSU, UC, AVC) FTV 103 *INTRODUCTION TO TELEVISION (formerly TH A 4/COMM 28) Same course as COMM 128. 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. This course is designed to develop the students ability to interpret television and video in terms of form and style. Students are introduced to relevant television history, theory and practice as a means of developing an appreciation of television as an art form. Representative texts will be screened to support the focus of each class and will serve as a springboard for analysis and discussion. (CSU, AVC) FTV 105 *HISTORY OF FILM Same course as COMM 141. 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. An introduction to the study of American and International film history, theory and aesthetics from the invention of the first film camera in the 1890s to the present day. This course will focus on the historical development of formal devices such as the shot, montage, mise-en-scene, sound design, color technology, and classical narrative form. (CSU, AVC) FTV 134 *INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING (formerly TH A 34R4/COMM 34R4/ ENGL 10C) Same course as COMM 134/ENGL 134. 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 101. An introductory screenwriting course in which students will get practical experience writing film scripts. Lectures will include practical as well as theoretical discussions involving screenwriting and film in general. Students will be required to read each others work and will also be exposed to professionally produced film scripts. (CSU, UC, AVC) (R3) FTV 201 *INTERCULTURAL AND WOMENS FILM (formerly TH A 33/COMM 44) Same course as COMM 244. 3 units 4 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. An introduction to the images on film of Women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, and Native Americans. The course covers the evolution of racial, ethnic, and sexual stereotypes in film, including the racist and sexist origins of those stereotypes, and efforts to more accurately and fairly portray sexual, racial, and ethnic diversity in cinema. In addition, the contributions of film artists from various backgrounds are highlighted. Screenings of representative films are used as the basis for class discussions. (CSU, UC, AVC) FTV 215 *DIRECTING THE ACTOR FOR THE CAMERA 3 units 4 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of FTV 101/COMM 131. Advisory: Completion of TH A 220. An introduction to the fundamental techniques of directing actors for the camera. Topics covered will include basic camera operation and techniques, text analysis, blocking and composition of the camera, working with the film crew, basic camera angles and lenses, proper camera movement motivation, and formulating a creative vision for the scene. These techniques will be applied to in-class scene work. (CSU, AVC) (R1) FTV 220 ADVANCED SCREENWRITING Same course as COMM 234/ENGL 215. 3 units 3 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of FTV 134/COMM 134/ENGL 134. An advanced course in which students will use the techniques learned from the introductory course to complete a professional, polished feature film screenplay. The student may also choose to bring in a first draft and do a rewrite and polish. The course will focus on advanced screenwriting techniques, styles, and forms, including alternative structure, nobudget , scripts, adaptation, and television writing. (CSU, AVC) (R1) FTV 230 *INTRODUCTION TO CINEMATOGRAPHY 3 units 4 hours weekly Course Prerequisite: Completion of FTV 101/COMM 131. Introduction to the fundamentals of cinematography, including the basics of video camera operation, theories of cinematography, basic elements of lighting, basic camera angles, camera movement, working with a camera crew, composition and framing, and specific problems and techniques for the low budget cinematographer.
