Page 198 of Antelope Valley College 1999-2000 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster California196 Library Definition Information literacy, the ability to effectively locate, analyze and use information, has become as necessary a skill as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Library courses provide the means to develop information literacy skills for academic class work and lifelong learning. These courses help students more effectively function in all programs offered at the college by teaching academic research methods and the organization of information. Students learn the history, development, and function of information in society and d e v e l o p a n a p p r e c i a t i o n o f h o w information skills enhance their lives beyond college. Prerequisite Completion If a course is listed as a prerequisite for another course, that prerequisite course must be completed with a satisfactory grade in order to enroll in the next course. According to the California Education Code [55200 (d)] a satisfactory grade is a grade of A, B, C, or CR . ATTENTION New Course Numbers Effective with the 1999-2000 academic year, AVC has adopted a new course numbering system. Former course numbers appear in parentheses after the new course numbers. A guide can be found on Pages 58-68 that provides an explanation of the new course numbering system along with an alphabetical list for converting former course numbers to new numbers. Library Courses LIB 101 INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARY RESEARCH (formerly LIB 1) 1 unit 1 hour weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. Provides students with a general introduction to the organization of a college library and methods for doing library research. Emphasis will be placed on information access tools in major academic disciplines. Exercises will develop skills for effectively utilizing library resources. Students will receive instruction in research strategies, classification systems, indexes and information analysis. Designed to facilitate knowledgeable use of libraries and efficient retrieval of information. Course content is not as comprehensive as LIB 105. (AVC) LIB 105 INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARIES AND INFORMATION (formerly LIB 2) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. This course provides an introduction to the rich variety of information resources in current use. Students will learn about information theory and gain specific skills appropriate for successful college library research. Students will learn how information is identified and defined by experts; how information sources are structured; how sources are accessed by users; and how information sources are physically organized and accessed. Students taking LIB 105 should not take LIB 101. (CSU, AVC) LIB 110 *INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET SEARCHING (formerly LIB 3) 1 unit 16 hours total Advisory: Completion of CA 161 and Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. An introductory course for all students in searching the global network of networks known as the Internet. Students should be familiar with the structure and content of the Internet. Students will learn how to develop search strategies for accessing information on the Internet. Course content includes identification, analysis and evaluation of search engines and searching tools.
