224 Nursing LVNs, foreign graduates needing to meet BRN licensing requirements, and transfer students will be admitted in the fall semester only. All nursing applicants must be in satisfactory physical and mental health, and be able to carry out all duties in the clinical area. This means students shall be free of any physical disabilities or emotional problems which would interfere with normal progress in learning and accepting t h e u s u a l d u t i e s and responsibilities of a nursing student. This includes freedom from substance dependency. A physicians written approval to continue in the program will be required for any student who becomes pregnant. The student must be under medical supervision during the pregnancy and postpartum period. The student must be able to participate in all learning experiences. Any student who becomes ill during the program, may, upon request of the faculty, be required to obtain a written statement from his/her physician verifying the students ability to continue in the program without any activity restriction. A student enrolled in the nursing program may be allowed tore-enroll in the program twice. Unsuccessful completion or withdrawal from any subsequent course, or failure to progress for any reason, will result in the student not being allowed to continue in the program. Disabled students or students with special needs considering entry into the nursing program and who feel they might need some special accommodations in either course work or clinical requirements should contact the Disabled Student Services Office. The Allied Health Division will work closely with the DSS office regarding special needs and accommodations. The student will be provided advisement in regards to whether the individual will be able to perform the duties of a Registered Nurse upon graduation. The Board of Registered Nursing may deny licensure to individuals who have been convicted of a felony. Any individual seeking admission to the nursing program who has such a conviction is advised to contact the Board of Registered Nursing to ascertain their status prior to seeking admission. Application Procedure It is important to complete the following: l Applications for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program are available in the Allied Health Division. Refer to the nursing brochure (available in the Allied Health Division) for specific application deadlines. l One set of official high school and college transcripts must be submitted with your application to the Allied Health Division, and another set should be on file in the college Student Services Center. Students must accept responsibility to contact high school(s) and college(s) previously attended for official transcripts. This should be done early in the application process. l Transcripts from other colleges must be evaluated by an AVC counselor for equivalency. Contact the Student Services Center for an appointment. l If not a high school graduate, an equivalency must be established by taking an appropriate test. An official copy of these results must be on file at the time of application. l A copy of the AVC assessment scores showing eligibility for ENGL 101 and MATH 102 must be submitted with the application. Submission of assessment scores is not necessary if ENGL 100 and MATH 100 have been completed with a minimum grade of C. l All courses to be considered in the evaluation process must be completed prior to submission of the application. Nursing courses, if previously taken, may be granted credit only for those subjects which are comparable to the requirements of the program in content, hours and units. A petition is required. All students are encouraged to set up an appointment with a counselor prior to submitting an application, and during enrollment in the program, to ensure they are meeting all of the graduation requirements. l Individuals may also challenge nursing courses contact the Allied Health Division for the challenge policy. l Foreign transcripts (high school and college) must be evaluated for United States equivalency by a credentials evaluation service. A subject and grade breakdown is required. The high school evaluation must state that the student has the equivalent of senior high school graduation in the United States. A list of evaluation services can be obtained from the Dean of Admissions or the Allied Health Division. l Every item in this application procedure is extremely important, and an oversight of any item will prevent you from being admitted to the program. l Submission of an application does not guarantee admission to the program. Selection Procedure Criteria which are used to establish selection into the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Antelope Valley College are: 1. Each applicant who meets the minimum requirements of the program becomes part of a pool of applicants and is selected by lottery. Applicants are identified by social security number and their numbers are drawn until classes are filled. There is a waiting list for admission to the Nursing Program, and students are placed on the waiting list in the order that they are drawn in the lottery. Students are notified in
