Page 229 of Antelope Valley College 1999-2000 Catalog by Antelope Valley Community College Lancaster CaliforniaNursing 227 NS 103 DEVELOPMENTAL AND HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE REQUISITES FOR PATIENTS WITH A CHRONIC ILLNESS (formerly NS 2B) 4 units 16 hours weekly (4 hours lecture, 12 hours lab) (8 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of NS 101, BIOL 204 and ENGL 101 with a grade of C or better. This course is based on Orems Self-Care Theory as applied to the care of patients with chronic illness. The concept that the patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities c o n n e c t e d w i t h t h e i r o w n h e a l t h maintenance, restoration, and prevention of complications is presented. The course provides theory and clinical practice to d e v e l o p a n u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f t h e pathophysiology of chronic diseases. The student learns self-care practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being, provide a developmental environment for patients continued development, and prevent harmful effects of either the illness or the health state requirements for the illness. The student is taught teaching/learning theory in order to perform the supportive/educative role of the nurse. (CSU, AVC) NS 200 NURSING TRANSITION (formerly NS 3) 1.5 units 27 hours total Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program for LVN students and transfer students. Course Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 101 and BIOL 204 with a grade of C or better. This course is designed to ease the entry of the Licensed Vocational Nurse and/or transfer student into the second year of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The course provides an introduction to selfcare theory and its application in the clinical setting. It integrates self-care theory with the nursing process. The course provides instruction in the development of nursing care plans, and will also provide for a math review with specific instruction concerning intra-venous medications. Threaded throughout the course will be information on study skills. (CSU, AVC) NS 201 DEVELOPMENTAL AND HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE REQUISITES RELATED TO MENTAL HEALTH OF THE ADOLESCENT AND ADULT (formerly NS 3A) 3.5 units 19.5 hours weekly (6.5 hours lecture, 13 hours lab) (5 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of NS 102 and NS 103 or completion of NS 200 for transfer and LVN students. This course is based on Orems Self-Care Theory as applied to the care of the adolescent and adult patient with developmental and health deviation selfcare requisites related to mental health. The concept that each patient should be involved as much as possible in the decisions and activities connected with their own mental health maintenance and restoration is presented. The course provides theory and guided clinical practice to promote an understanding of normal and pathophysiological processes which maintain or alter sound mental health and the self-care practices that p r o m o t e m e n t a l w e l l b e i n g . T h e relationship of the universal self-care requisites to the developmental and health deviation self-care requisites of the adolescent and adult patient with mental illness is presented. The interrelationship between various psychological developmental theories and Orems self-care theory will be examined. The supportive/ educative role of the nurse is emphasized with the goal of fostering the self-care agency of each patient. (CSU, AVC) NS 202 DEVELOPMENTAL AND HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE REQUISITES FOR CHILDREN (formerly NS 3B) 3.5 units 19.5 hours weekly (7 hours lecture, 12.5 hours lab) (5 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment: Formal admission to ADN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of NS 102 and NS 103 or completion of NS 200 for transfer and LVN students. This course is based on Orems Self-Care Theory as applied to the care of pediatric patients. The care of the pediatric patient is presented as it pertains to his/her developmental state, health maintenance restoration, prevention of complications, and prevention of health problems. The course provides child development theory, theory and clinical practice on the pathophysiology of major pediatric illnesses. The student learns pediatric selfcare practices and nursing actions which promote health and well-being, provide a developmental environment for the patients continued development and prevent harmful effects of either the illness or the health-state requirements for the illness. The student continues to improve his/her use of teaching/learning theory. (CSU, AVC) NS 203 DEVELOPMENTAL AND HEALTH DEVIATION SELF-CARE REQUISITES IN ACUTE ILLNESS (formerly NS 3C) 3.5 units 19.5 hours weekly (6.5 hours lecture, 13 hours lab) (5 weeks) Limitation on Enrollment.: Formal admission to ADN Program. Course Prerequisite: Completion of NS 102 and NS 103 or completion of NS 200 for transfer and LVN students.
