268 Sociology Definition Sociology is both a scientific and a humanistic discipline. It is concerned with the study of systems of social action and their interrelations. The systems of action include, in increasing order of size and complexity: single social acts, social relationships, organizations, institutions, communities and societies. There are also substantive courses in marriage and the family, and social problems. Distinctive Features The program includes a variety of courses, and utilizes a number of teaching methods, including those which emphasize student participation through group and individual activity. Certificate Program Certificate not applicable. Associate Degree An associate degree with a major in Sociology is not available. Sociology courses can be included in the 18 units necessary for an associate degree with a major in Letters, Arts, and Sciences. (See Graduation/Associate Degree Requirements.) Transfer A student planning to pursue a bachelors degree should complete the following courses prior to transfer. Sociology Major-CSU, Northridge MATH 115, Statistics 3 SOC 101, Introduction to Sociology 3 NOTE: This information is based on the 1996 97 articulation agreement. NOTE: Requirements may vary at other institutions. Check the appropriate catalog(s) and consult with a counselor. Prerequisite Completion If a course is listed as a prerequisite for another course, that prerequisite course must be completed with a satisfactory grade in order to enroll in the next course. According to the California Education Code [55200 (d)] a satisfactory grade is a grade of A, B, C, or CR . ATTENTION New Course Numbers Effective with the 1999-2000 academic year, AVC has adopted a new course numbering system. Former course numbers appear in parentheses after the new course numbers. A guide can be found on Pages 58-68 that provides an explanation of the new course numbering system along with an alphabetical list for converting former course numbers to new numbers. Sociology Courses SOC 101 INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY (formerly SOC 1) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 100 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101. An introduction to the study of social processes and a consideration of the concepts of culture. Development of an understanding of the dependency of our society on those around us as well as those who have gone before. A presentation of the basic tools of sociological analysis. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 105 *THE MEXICAN AMERICAN IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY (formerly SOC 10) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100 and READ 099. A broad social and historical study of the major characteristics of the second largest minority in the United States and largest in the Southwest. Attention will be given to the racial, sexual, social, educational, cultural, economic, and political elements
