This course is a study of the social, historical and political components of race relations in the United States. Major ethnic groups will be examined in detail as will questions concerning techniques designed to promote peaceful and successful interaction. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 111 *ISSUES AND CONCEPTS IN AGING (formerly SOC 35) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100. Introductory study of the social, psychological, and physical aspects of growing older in American society, with emphasis on health, finances, retirement, interpersonal and intergenerational relations, psychological adjustment, death and dying. (CSU, AVC) SOC 112 *AMERICAN SOCIAL ISSUES: PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES (formerly SOC 2) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of SOC 101, and Eligibility for ENGL 100. American Social Issues is a course designed to acquaint the student with major social issues facing the United States. This course focuses on origins, sustaining causes, and possible solutions to societal issues. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 115 *MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE (formerly SOC 40) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100. A study of the American family which includes sociological, psychological, historical, economical, ethical, and legal aspects of courtship, marriage, and family life. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 120 *DRUGS, SOCIETY AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR (formerly SOC 47) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Completion of SOC 112, and Eligibility for ENGL 100. An overview of the historical and contemporary role of alcohol and drugs in society, with emphasis on patterns of use and abuse; major categories of drugs, comparative analysis of treatment modalities with at least two field trips to recovery and rehabilitation programs. (CSU, AVC) SOC 122 *FAMILY VIOLENCE (formerly SOC 4 1) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100. This course is designed to investigate the side of family life that is not well understood, that of domestic violence. This class will examine the theory, family dynamics, myths, and societal costs of major areas of intro-family violence: spousal violence, elderly abuse, child abuse, and incest. (CSU, AVC) SOC 124 *DYNAMICS OF SEX AND GENDER (formerly SOC 45/SYCH 19) Same course as PSY 2 19. 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 100 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101. This course is designed to explore the development of sex and gender roles focusing on the similarities and differences for females and males. The attention on sex roles as a result of contemporary societal shifts will be examined as will the impact of these changes on the family, the work place, education, and leisure activities. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 125 *WOMEN AND AMERICAN CULTURE (formerly SOC 43) 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for ENGL 100. This survey course is designed to introduce the student to the theories, conditions, and realities of being a female in the United States. The class uses an interdisciplinary approach to examine the societal institutions and conditions which largely shape womens lives. It focuses on a scholarly examination of the conditions of being female that have been omitted in traditional introductory sociology classes. (CSU, UC, AVC) SOC 230 SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY (formerly SOC 30/PSYCH 30) Same course as PSY 230. 3 units 3 hours weekly Advisory: Eligibility for College Level Reading and ENGL 100 or satisfactory completion of ENGL 101, and Completion of PSY 101 or 055 or SOC 101. This course studies human interaction, and emphasizes the influence of the social context on behavior and experience. The course addresses the traditional social psychological topics such as social cognition, person perception, attitude formation and change, persuasion, conformity, group processes, pro-social behavior, attraction, aggression, and prejudice. Furthermore, the course will consider more recent applications of social psychological theory and research in the legal and health systems. The methods used to study the above will also be addressed.
